Vivid with love eager for greater beautyA
Out of the night we comeB
Into the corridor brilliant and warmC
A metal door slides openD
And the lift receives usE
Swiftly with sharp unswerving flightF
The car shoots upwardG
And the air swirling and angryA
Howls like a hundred devilsH
Past the maze of trim bronze doorsI
Steadily we ascendJ
I cling to youK
Conscious of the chasm under usE
And a terrible whirring deafens my earsL
-
The flight is endedM
-
We pass thru a door leading onto the ledgeN
Wind night and spaceO
Oh terrible heightF
Why have we sought youK
Oh bitter wind with icy invisible wingsP
Why do you beat usE
Why would you bear us awayQ
We look thru the miles of airR
The cold blue miles between us and the cityA
Over the edge of eternity we lookS
On all the lightsT
A thousand times more numerous than the starsU
Oh lines and loops of light in unwound chainsV
That mark for miles and milesW
The vast black mazy cobweb of the streetsX
Near us clusters and splashes of living goldY
That change far off to bluish steelZ
Where the fragile lights on the Jersey shoreA2
Tremble like drops of wind stirred dewK
The strident noises of the cityA
Floating up to usE
Are hallowed into whispersB2
Ferries cross thru the darknessE
Weaving a golden thread into the nightF
Their whistles weird shadows of soundC2
-
We feel the millions of humanity beneath usE
The warm millions moving under the roofsD2
Consumed by their own desiresB2
Preparing foodE2
Sobbing alone in a garretF2
With burning eyes bending over a needleG2
Aimlessly reading the evening paperH2
Dancing in the naked light of the caf eacuteF2
Laying out the deadF2
Bringing a child to birthI2
The sorrow the torpor the bitterness the frail joyJ2
Come up to usE
Like a cold fog wrapping us roundF2
Oh in a hundred yearsL
Not one of these blood warm bodiesK2
But will be worthless as clayQ
The anguish the torpor the toilL2
Will have passed to other millionsM2
Consumed by the same desiresB2
Ages will come and goN2
Darkness will blot the lightsT
And the tower will be laid on the earthI2
The sea will remainO2
Black and unchangingP2
The stars will look downQ2
Brilliant and unconcernedF2
-
BelovedF2
Tho' sorrow futility defeatF2
Surround usE
They cannot bear us downQ2
Here on the abyss of eternityF2
Love has crowned usE
For a momentF2
VictorsB2
