Barter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD AEFEGG BHBIBB

Life has loveliness to sellA
All beautiful and splendid thingsB
Blue waves whitened on a cliffC
Soaring fire that sways and singsB
And children's faces looking upD
Holding wonder like a cupD
-
Life has loveliness to sellA
Music like a curve of goldE
Scent of pine trees in the rainF
Eyes that love you arms that holdE
And for the Spirit's still delightG
Holy thoughts that star the nightG
-
Give all you have for lovelinessB
Buy it and never count the costH
For one white singing hour of peaceB
Count many a year of strife well lostI
And for a breath of ecstasyB
Give all you have been or could beB

Tom Linnell: My 8th grade teacher read this to us, and she was in tears by the end. We were moved to see her emotion and to realize the power of poetry in the person right in front of us. I have never forgotten that moment. I am now 76 years old and the poem speaks right to me still.
