To A Friend, With An Unfinished Poem Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLLMNOPQRS TUVOHOKWXOBY ZThus far my scanty brain hath built the rhyme | A |
Elaborate and swelling yet the heart | B |
Not owns it From thy spirit breathing powers | C |
I ask not now my friend the aiding verse | D |
Tedious to thee and from thy anxious thought | E |
Of dissonant mood In fancy well I know | F |
From business wand'ring far and local cares | G |
Thou creepest round a dear loved sister's bed | H |
With noiseless step and watchest the faint look | I |
Soothing each pang with fond solicitude | J |
And tenderest tones medicinal of love | K |
I too a sister had an only sister | L |
She loved me dearly and I doted on her | L |
To her I pour'd forth all my puny sorrows | M |
As a sick patient in a nurse's arms | N |
And of the heart those hidden maladies | O |
That e'en from friendship's eye will shrink ashamed | P |
O I have waked at midnight and have wept | Q |
Because she was not Cheerily dear Charles | R |
Thou thy best friend shalt cherish many a year | S |
Such warm presages feel I of high hope | T |
For not uninterested the dear maid | U |
I've view'd her soul affectionate yet wise | V |
Her polish'd wit as mild as lambent glories | O |
That play around a sainted infant's head | H |
He knows the Spirit that in secret sees | O |
Of whose omniscient and all spreading love | K |
Aught to implore were impotence of mind | W |
That my mute thoughts are sad before his throne | X |
Prepared when He his healing ray vouchsafes | O |
Thanksgiving to pour forth with lifted heart | B |
And praise him gracious with a brother's joy | Y |
