PART IA
-
It is an ancient MarinerB
And he stoppeth one of threeC
'By thy long grey beard and glittering eyeA
Now wherefore stopp'st thou meC
-
The Bridegroom's doors are opened wideD
And I am next of kinE
The guests are met the feast is setF
May'st hear the merry din '-
-
He holds him with his skinny handG
'There was a ship ' quoth heC
'Hold off unhand me grey beard loon '-
Eftsoons his hand dropt heC
-
He holds him with his glittering eyeA
The Wedding Guest stood stillH
And listens like a three years childI
The Mariner hath his willH
-
The Wedding Guest sat on a stoneJ
He cannot chuse but hearK
And thus spake on that ancient manL
The bright eyed MarinerB
-
'The ship was cheered the harbour clearedM
Merrily did we dropN
Below the kirk 'below the hillH
Below the lighthouse topN
-
The Sun came up upon the leftO
Out of the sea came heC
And he shone bright and on the rightP
Went down into the seaC
-
Higher and higher every dayQ
Till over the mast at noon'L
The Wedding Guest here beat his breastR
For he heard the loud bassoonL
-
The bride hath paced into the hallS
Red as a rose is sheC
Nodding their heads before her goesT
The merry minstrelsyT
-
The Wedding Guest he beat his breastR
Yet he cannot chuse but hearK
And thus spake on that ancient manL
The bright eyed MarinerB
-
'And now the STORM BLAST Came and heC
Was tyrannous and strongU
He struck with his o'ertaking wingsT
And chased us south alongU
-
With sloping masts and dipping prowV
As who pursued with yell and blowW
Still treads the shadow of his foeW
And forward bends his headX
The ship drove fast loud roared the blastY
And southward aye we fledX
-
And now there came both mist and snowW
And it grew wondrous coldZ
And ice mast high came floating byA
As green as emeraldA2
-
And through the drifts the snowy cliftsT
Did send a dismal sheenL
Nor shapes of men nor beasts we kenL
The ice was all betweenL
-
The ice was here the ice was thereB2
The ice was all aroundC2
It cracked and growled and roared and howledD2
Like noises in a swoundD2
-
At length did cross an AlbatrossT
Thorough the fog it cameE2
As if it had been a Christian soulF2
We hailed it in God's nameE2
-
It ate the food it ne'er had eatD2
And round and round it flewG2
The ice did split with a thunder fitD2
The helmsman steered us throughG2
-
And a good south wind sprung up behindD2
The Albatross did followW
And every day for food or playQ
Came to the mariner's holloW
-
In mist or cloud on mast or shroudD2
It perched for vespers nineL
Whiles all the night through fog smoke whiteD2
Glimmered the white moon shine '-
-
'God save thee ancient MarinerB
From the fiends that plague thee thusT
Why look'st thou so ' With my cross bowV
I shot the ALBATROSST
-
PART IIA
-
The Sun now rose upon the rightD2
Out of the sea came heC
Still hid in mist and on the leftD2
Went down into the seaC
-
And the good south wind still blew behindD2
But no sweet bird did followW
Nor any day for food or playQ
Came to the mariners' holloW
-
And I had done an hellish thingH2
And it would work 'em woeW
For all averred I had killed the birdD2
That made the breeze to blowW
Ah wretch said they the bird to slayQ
That made the breeze to blowW
-
Nor dim nor red like God's own headD2
The glorious Sun upristD2
Then all averred I had killed the birdD2
That brought the fog and mistD2
'Twas right said they such birds to slayQ
That bring the fog and mistD2
-
The fair breeze blew the white foam flewG2
The furrow followed freeC
We were the first that ever burstD2
Into that silent seaC
-
Down dropt the breeze the sails dropt downL
'Twas sad as sad could beC
And we did speak only to breakI2
The silence of the seaC
-
All in a hot and copper skyA
The bloody Sun at noonL
Right up above the mast did standD2
No bigger than the MoonL
-
Day after day day after dayQ
We stuck nor breath nor motionL
As idle as a painted shipJ2
Upon a painted oceanL
-
Water water every whereB2
And all the boards did shrinkK2
Water water every whereB2
Nor any drop to drinkK2
-
The very deep did rot O ChristD2
That ever this should beC
Yea slimy things did crawl with legsT
Upon the slimy seaC
-
About about in reel and routD2
The death fires danced at nightD2
The water like a witch's oilsT
Burnt green and blue and whiteD2
-
And some in dreams assured wereB
Of the Spirit that plagued us soW
Nine fathom deep he had followed usT
From the land of mist and snowW
-
And every tongue through utter droughtD2
Was withered at the rootD2
We could not speak no more than ifL2
We had been choked with sootD2
-
Ah well a day what evil looksT
Had I from old and youngM2
Instead of the cross the AlbatrossT
About my neck was hungM2
-
PART IIIA
-
There passed a weary time Each throatD2
Was parched and glazed each eyeA
A weary time a weary timeN2
How glazed each weary eyeA
When looking westward I beheldD2
A something in the skyA
-
At first it seemed a little speckO2
And then it seemed a mistD2
It moved and moved and took at lastD2
A certain shape I wistD2
-
A speck a mist a shape I wistD2
And still it neared and nearedD2
As if it dodged a water spriteD2
It plunged and tacked and veeredD2
-
With throats unslaked with black lips bakedD2
We could nor laugh nor wailP2
Through utter drought all dumb we stoodD2
I bit my arm I sucked the bloodD2
And cried A sail a sailP2
-
With throats unslaked with black lips bakedD2
Agape they heard me callS
Gramercy they for joy did grinL
And all at once their breath drew inL
As they were drinking allS
-
See see I cried she tacks no moreQ2
Hither to work us wealS
Without a breeze without a tideD2
She steadies with upright keelS
-
The western wave was all a flameE2
The day was well nigh doneL
Almost upon the western waveR2
Rested the broad bright SunL
When that strange shape drove suddenlyS
Betwixt us and the SunL
-
And straight the Sun was flecked with barsT
Heaven's Mother send us graceT
As if through a dungeon grate he peeredD2
With broad and burning faceT
-
Alas thought I and my heart beat loudD2
How fast she nears and nearsT
Are those her sails that glance in the SunL
Like restless gossameresT
-
Are those her ribs through which the SunL
Did peer as through a grateD2
And is that Woman all her crewG2
Is that a DEATH and are there twoG2
Is DEATH that woman's mateD2
-
Her lips were red her looks were freeS
Her locks were yellow as goldD2
Her skin was as white as leprosyS
The Night mare LIFE IN DEATH was sheS
Who thicks man's blood with coldD2
-
The naked hulk alongside cameE2
And the twain were casting diceT
'The game is done I've won I've won '-
Quoth she and whistles thriceT
-
The Sun's rim dips the stars rush outD2
At one stride comes the darkS2
With far heard whisper o'er the seaS
Off shot the spectre barkS2
-
We listened and looked sideways upT2
Fear at my heart as at a cupT2
My life blood seemed to sipJ2
The stars were dim and thick the nightD2
The steersman's face by his lamp gleamed whiteD2
-
From the sails the dew did dripJ2
Till clomb above the eastern barU2
The horned Moon with one bright starU2
Within the nether tipJ2
-
One after one by the star dogged MoonL
Too quick for groan or sighA
Each turned his face with a ghastly pangV2
And cursed me with his eyeA
-
Four times fifty living menL
And I heard nor sigh nor groanL
With heavy thump a lifeless lumpW2
They dropped down one by oneL
-
The souls did from their bodies flyA
They fled to bliss or woeW
And every soul it passed me byA
Like the whizz of my cross bowV
-
PART IVA
-
I fear thee ancient MarinerB
I fear thy skinny handD2
And thou art long and lank and brownL
As is the ribbed sea sandD2
-
I fear thee and thy glittering eyeA
And thy skinny hand so brown '-
Fear not fear not thou Wedding GuestD2
This body dropt not downL
-
Alone alone all all aloneL
Alone on a wide wide seaS
And never a saint took pity onL
My soul in agonyS
-
The many men so beautifulS
And they all dead did lieA
And a thousand thousand slimy thingsT
Lived on and so did IA
-
I looked upon the rotting seaS
And drew my eyes awayQ
I looked upon the rotting deckO2
And there the dead men layQ
-
I looked to Heaven and tried to prayQ
But or ever a prayer had gushtD2
A wicked whisper came and madeD2
My heart as dry as dustD2
-
I closed my lids and kept them closeT
And the balls like pulses beatD2
For the sky and the sea and the sea and the skyA
Lay like a load on my weary eyeA
And the dead were at my feetD2
-
The cold sweat melted from their limbsT
Nor rot nor reek did theyQ
The look with which they looked on meS
Had never passed awayQ
-
An orphan's curse would drag to HellS
A spirit from on highA
But oh more horrible than thatD2
Is a curse in a dead man's eyeA
Seven days seven nights I saw that curseT
And yet I could not dieA
-
The moving Moon went up the skyA
And no where did abideD2
Softly she was going upT2
And a star or two besideD2
-
Her beams bemocked the sultry mainL
Like April hoar frost spreadD2
But where the ship's huge shadow layQ
The charmed water burnt alwayQ
A still and awful redD2
-
Beyond the shadow of the shipJ2
I watched the water snakesT
They moved in tracks of shining whiteD2
And when they reared the elfish lightD2
Fell off in hoary flakesT
-
Within the shadow of the shipJ2
I watched their rich attireB
Blue glossy green and velvet blackX2
They coiled and swam and every trackX2
Was a flash of golden fireB
-
O happy living things no tongueM2
Their beauty might declareB2
A spring of love gushed from my heartD2
And I blessed them unawareB2
Sure my kind saint took pity on meS
And I blessed them unawareB2
-
The self same moment I could prayQ
And from my neck so freeS
The Albatross fell off and sankY2
Like lead into the seaS
-
PART VS
-
Oh sleep it is a gentle thingH2
Beloved from pole to poleS
To Mary Queen the praise be givenL
She sent the gentle sleep from HeavenL
That slid into my soulS
-
The silly buckets on the deckO2
That had so long remainedD2
I dreamt that they were filled with dewD2
And when I awoke it rainedD2
-
My lips were wet my throat was coldD2
My garments all were dankY2
Sure I had drunken in my dreamsT
And still my body drankY2
-
I moved and could not feel my limbsT
I was so light almostD2
I thought that I had died in sleepZ2
And was a blessed ghostD2
-
And soon I heard a roaring windD2
It did not come anearS
But with its sound it shook the sailsT
That were so thin and sereS
-
The upper air burst into lifeA
And a hundred fire flags sheenL
To and fro they were hurried aboutD2
And to and fro and in and outD2
The wan stars danced betweenL
-
And the coming wind did roar more loudD2
And the sails did sigh like sedgeA3
And the rain poured down from one black cloudD2
The Moon was at its edgeA3
-
The thick black cloud was cleft and stillS
The Moon was at its sideD2
Like waters shot from some high cragY2
The lightning fell with never a jagY2
A river steep and wideD2
-
The loud wind never reached the shipJ2
Yet now the Ship moved onL
Beneath the lightning and the MoonL
The dead men gave a groanL
-
They groaned they stirred they all uproseT
Nor spake nor moved their eyesT
It had been strange even in a dreamB3
To have seen those dead men riseT
-
The helmsman steered the ship moved onL
Yet never a breeze up blewD2
The mariners all 'gan work the ropesT
Where they were wont to doD2
They raised their limbs like lifeless toolsT
We were a ghastly crewD2
-
The body of my brother's sonL
Stood by me knee to kneeS
The body and I pulled at one ropeC3
But he said nought to meS
-
'I fear thee ancient Mariner '-
Be calm thou Wedding GuestD2
'Twas not those souls that fled in painL
Which to their corses came againL
But a troop of spirits blestD2
-
For when it dawned they dropped their armsT
And clustered round the mastD2
Sweet sounds rose slowly through their mouthsT
And from their bodies passedD2
-
Around around flew each sweet soundD2
Then darted to the SunL
Slowly the sounds came back againL
Now mixed now one by oneL
-
Sometimes a dropping from the skyY2
I heard the sky lark singY2
Sometimes all little birds that areS
How they seemed to fill the sea and airS
With their sweet jargoningY2
-
And now 'twas like all instrumentsT
Now like a lonely fluteD2
And now it is an angel's songY2
That makes the Heavens be muteD2
-
It ceased yet still the sails made onL
A pleasant noise till noonL
A noise like of a hidden brookY2
In the leafy month of JuneL
That to the sleeping woods all nightD2
Singeth a quiet tuneL
-
Till noon we quietly sailed onL
Yet never a breeze did breatheD3
Slowly and smoothly went the shipJ2
Moved onward from beneathE3
-
Under the keel nine fathom deepZ2
From the land of mist and snowW
The spirit slid and it was heS
That made the ship to goW
The sails at noon left off their tuneL
And the ship stood still alsoW
-
The Sun right up above the mastD2
Had fixed her to the oceanL
But in a minute she 'gan stirS
With a short uneasy motionL
Backwards and forwards half her lengthF3
With a short uneasy motionL
-
Then like a pawing horse let goW
She made a sudden boundD2
It flung the blood into my headD2
And I fell down in a swoundD2
-
How long in that same fit I layQ
I have not to declareS
But ere my living life returnedD2
I heard and in my soul discernedD2
Two VOICES in the airS
-
'Is it he ' quoth one 'Is this the manL
By him who died on crossT
With his cruel bow he laid full lowW
The harmless AlbatrossT
-
The spirit who bideth by himselfA
In the land of mist and snowW
He loved the bird that loved the manL
Who shot him with his bow '-
-
The other was a softer voiceT
As soft as honey dewD2
Quoth he 'The man hath penance doneL
And penance more will do '-
-
PART VIY2
-
FIRST VOICET
'But tell me tell me speak againL
Thy soft response renewingY2
What makes that ship drive on so fastD2
What is the OCEAN doing '-
-
SECOND VOICET
'Still as a slave before his lordD2
The OCEAN hath no blastD2
His great bright eye most silentlyS
Up to the Moon is castD2
-
If he may know which way to goW
For she guides him smooth or grimG3
See brother see how graciouslyS
She looketh down on him '-
-
FIRST VOICET
'But why drives on that ship so fastD2
Without a wave or wind '-
-
SECOND VOICET
'The air is cut away beforeS
And closes from behindD2
-
Fly brother fly more high more highY2
Or we shall be belatedD2
For slow and slow that ship will goW
When the Mariner's trance is abated '-
-
I woke and we were sailing onL
As in a gentle weatherS
'Twas night calm night the Moon was highY2
The dead men stood togetherS
-
All stood together on the deckY2
For a charnel dungeon fitterS
All fixed on me their stony eyesT
That in the Moon did glitterS
-
The pang the curse with which they diedD2
Had never passed awayQ
I could not draw my eyes from theirsT
Nor turn them up to prayQ
-
And now this spell was snapt once moreS
I viewed the ocean greenL
And looked far forth yet little sawT
Of what had else been seenL
-
Like one that on a lonesome roadD2
Doth walk in fear and dreadD2
And having once turned round walks onL
And turns no more his headD2
Because he knows a frightful fiendD2
Doth close behind him treadD2
-
But soon there breathed a wind on meS
Nor sound nor motion madeD2
Its path was not upon the seaS
In ripple or in shadeD2
-
It raised my hair it fanned my cheekY2
Like a meadow gale of springY2
It mingled strangely with my fearsT
Yet it felt like a welcomingY2
-
Swiftly swiftly flew the shipJ2
Yet she sailed softly tooD2
Sweetly sweetly blew the breezeT
On me alone it blewD2
-
Oh dream of joy is this indeedD2
The light house top I seeS
Is this the hill is this the kirkY2
Is this mine own countreeS
-
We drifted o'er the harbour barS
And I with sobs did prayS
O let me be awake my GodD2
Or let me sleep alwayQ
-
The harbour bay was clear as glassT
So smoothly it was strewnL
And on the bay the moonlight layS
And the shadow of the MoonL
-
The rock shone bright the kirk no lessT
That stands above the rockY2
The moonlight steeped in silentnessT
The steady weathercockY2
-
And the bay was white with silent lightD2
Till rising from the sameE2
Full many shapes that shadows wereS
In crimson colours cameE2
-
A little distance from the prowS
Those crimson shadows wereS
I turned my eyes upon the deckY2
Oh Christ what saw I thereS
-
Each corse lay flat lifeless and flatD2
And by the holy roodD2
A man all light a seraph manL
On every corse there stoodD2
-
This seraph band each waved his handD2
It was a heavenly sightD2
They stood as signals to the landD2
Each one a lovely lightD2
-
This seraph band each waved his handD2
No voice did they impartD2
No voice but oh the silence sankY2
Like music on my heartD2
-
But soon I heard the dash of oarsT
I heard the Pilot's cheerS
My head was turned perforce awayS
And I saw a boat appearS
-
The Pilot and the Pilot's boyH3
I heard them coming fastD2
Dear Lord in Heaven it was a joyH3
The dead men could not blastD2
-
I saw a third I heard his voiceT
It is the Hermit goodD2
He singeth loud his godly hymnsT
That he makes in the woodD2
He'll shrieve my soul he'll wash awayS
The Albatross's bloodD2
-
PART VIIY2
-
This Hermit good lives in that woodD2
Which slopes down to the seaT
How loudly his sweet voice he rearsT
He loves to talk with marineresT
That come from a far countreeS
-
He kneels at morn and noon and eveY2
He hath a cushion plumpW2
It is the moss that wholly hidesT
The rotted old oak stumpW2
-
The skiff boat neared I heard them talkY2
'Why this is strange I trowS
Where are those lights so many and fairS
That signal made but now '-
-
'Strange by my faith ' the Hermit saidD2
'And they answered not our cheerS
The planks looked warped and see those sailsT
How thin they are and sereS
I never saw aught like to themI3
Unless perchance it wereS
-
Brown skeletons of leaves that lagY2
My forest brook alongY2
When the ivy tod is heavy with snowS
And the owlet whoops to the wolf belowS
That eats the she wolf's young '-
-
'Dear Lord it hath a fiendish lookY2
The Pilot made replyY2
I am a feared' 'Push on push on '-
Said the Hermit cheerilyY2
-
The boat came closer to the shipJ2
But I nor spake nor stirredD2
The boat came close beneath the shipJ2
And straight a sound was heardD2
-
Under the water it rumbled onL
Still louder and more dreadD2
It reached the ship it split the bayS
The ship went down like leadD2
-
Stunned by that loud and dreadful soundD2
Which sky and ocean smoteD2
Like one that hath been seven days drownedD2
My body lay afloatD2
But swift as dreams myself I foundD2
Within the Pilot's boatD2
-
Upon the whirl where sank the shipJ2
The boat spun round and roundD2
And all was still save that the hillY2
Was telling of the soundD2
-
I moved my lips the Pilot shriekedD2
And fell down in a fitD2
The holy Hermit raised his eyesT
And prayed where he did sitD2
-
I took the oars the Pilot's boyH3
Who now doth crazy goS
Laughed loud and long and all the whileY2
His eyes went to and froS
'Ha ha ' quoth he 'full plain I seeT
The Devil knows how to row '-
-
And now all in my own countreeS
I stood on the firm landD2
The Hermit stepped forth from the boatD2
And scarcely he could standD2
-
'O shrieve me shrieve me holy man '-
The Hermit crossed his browS
'Say quick ' quoth he 'I bid thee sayS
What manner of man art thou '-
-
Forthwith this frame of mine was wrenchedD2
With a woeful agonyT
Which forced me to begin my taleY2
And then it left me freeT
-
Since then at an uncertain hourS
That agony returnsT
And till my ghastly tale is toldD2
This heart within me burnsT
-
I pass like night from land to landD2
I have strange power of speechJ3
That moment that his face I seeT
I know the man that must hear meT
To him my tale I teachJ3
-
What loud uproar bursts from that doorS
The wedding guests are thereS
But in the garden bower the brideD2
And bride maids singing areS
And hark the little vesper bellY2
Which biddeth me to prayerS
-
O Wedding Guest this soul hath beenL
Alone on a wide wide seaT
So lonely 'twas that God himselfY2
Scarce seemed there to beT
-
O sweeter than the marriage feastD2
'Tis sweeter far to meT
To walk together to the kirkY2
With a goodly companyT
-
To walk together to the kirkY2
And all together prayS
While each to his great Father bendsT
Old men and babes and loving friendsT
And youths and maidens gayS
-
Farewell farewell but this I tellY2
To thee thou Wedding GuestD2
He prayeth well who loveth wellY2
Both man and bird and beastD2
-
He prayeth best who loveth bestD2
All things both great and smallY2
For the dear God who loveth usT
He made and loveth all '-
-
The Mariner whose eye is brightD2
Whose beard with age is hoarS
Is gone and now the Wedding GuestD2
Turned from the bridegroom's doorS
-
He went like one that hath been stunnedD2
And is of sense forlornL
A sadder and a wiser manL
He rose the morrow mornL
