IA
Whom the untaught Shepherds callB
Pixies in their madrigalC
Fancy's children here we dwellD
Welcome Ladies to our cellD
Here the wren of softest noteE
Builds its nest and warbles wellD
Here the blackbird strains his throatE
Welcome Ladies to our cellD
-
IIA
When fades the moon to shadowy paleF
And scuds the cloud before the galeF
Ere the Morn all gem bedightE
Hath streak'd the East with rosy lightE
We sip the furze flower's fragrant dewsG
Clad in robes of rainbow huesG
Or sport amid the shooting gleamsH
To the tune of distant tinkling teamsH
While lusty Labour scouting sorrowI
Bids the Dame a glad good morrowI
Who jogs the accustomed road alongJ
And paces cheery to her cheering songJ
-
IIIA
But not our filmy pinionK
We scorch amid the blaze of dayE
When Noontide's fiery tressed minionK
Flashes the fervid rayE
Aye from the sultry heatE
We to the cave retreatE
O'ercanopied by huge roots intertwinedE
With wildest texture blackened o'er with ageL
Round them their mantle green the ivies bindE
Beneath whose foliage paleF
Fanned by the unfrequent galeF
We shield us from the Tyrant's mid day rageL
-

Thither while the murmuring throngJ
Of wild bees hum their drowsy songJ
By Indolence and Fancy broughtE
A youthful Bard 'unknown to Fame'N
Wooes the Queen of Solemn ThoughtE
And heaves the gentle misery of a sighM
Gazing with tearful eyeM
As round our sandy grot appearO
Many a rudely sculptured nameN
To pensive Memory dearO
Weaving gay dreams of sunny tinctured hueP
We glance before his viewP
O'er his hush'd soul our soothing witcheries shedE
And twine the future garland round his headE
-
VM
When Evening's dusky carQ
Crowned with her dewy starQ
Steals o'er the fading sky in shadowy flightE
On leaves of aspen treesR
We tremble to the breezeR
Veiled from the grosser ken of mortal sightE
Or haply at the visionary hourS
Along our wildly bowered sequestered walkT
We listen to the enamoured rustic's talkT
Heave with the heavings of the maiden's breastE
Where young eyed Loves have hid their turtle nestE
Or guide of soul subduing powerS
The glance that from the half confessing eyeM
Darts the fond question or the soft replyM
-
VIM
Or through the mystic ringlets of the valeF
We flash our faery feet in gamesome prankU
Or silent sandal'd pay our defter courtE
Circling the Spirit of the Western GaleF
Where wearied with his flower caressing sportE
Supine he slumbers on a violet bankU
Then with quaint music hymn the parting gleamN
By lonely Otter's sleep persuading streamN
Or where his wave with loud unquiet songJ
Dashed o'er the rocky channel froths alongJ
Or where his silver waters smoothed to restE
The tall tree's shadow sleeps upon his breastE
-
VIIM
Hence thou lingerer LightE
Eve saddens into NightE
Mother of wildly working dreams we viewM
The sombre hours that round thee standE
With down cast eyes a duteous bandE
Their dark robes dripping with the heavy dewM
Sorceress of the ebon throneV
Thy power the Pixies ownV
When round thy raven browW
Heaven's lucent roses glowI
And clouds in watery colours drestM
Float in light drapery o'er thy sable vestM
What time the pale moon sheds a softer dayM
Mellowing the woods beneath its pensive beamN
For mid the quivering light 'tis ours to playM
Aye dancing to the cadence of the streamN
-
VIIIM
Welcome Ladies to the cellD
Where the blameless Pixies dwellD
But thou sweet Nymph proclaimed our Faery QueenX
With what obeisance meetM
Thy presence shall we greetM
For lo attendant on thy steps are seenX
Graceful Ease in artless stoleY
And white robed Purity of soulY
With Honour's softer mienX
Mirth of the loosely flowing hairZ
And meek eyed Pity eloquently fairZ
Whose tearful cheeks are lovely to the viewM
As snow drop wet with dewM
-
IXR
Unboastful Maid though now the Lily paleF
Transparent grace thy beauties meekA2
Yet ere again along the impurpling valeF
The purpling vale and elfin haunted groveM
Young Zephyr his fresh flowers profusely throwsR
We'll tinge with livelier hues thy cheekA2
And haply from the nectar breathing RoseR
Extract a Blush for LoveM
