This day among the faithful placedA
And fed with fontal mannaB
O with maternal title gracedA
Dear Anna's dearest AnnaB
-
While others wish thee wise and fairC
A maid of spotless fameD
I'll breathe this more compendious prayerC
May'st thou deserve thy nameD
-
Thy mother's name a potent spellE
That bids the virtues hieF
From mystic grove and living cellE
Confess'd to fancy's eyeG
-
Meek quietness without offenceH
Content in homespun kirtleE
True love and true love's innocenceH
White blossom of the myrtleE
-
Associates of thy name sweet childI
These virtues may'st thou winJ
With face as eloquently mildI
To say they lodge withinJ
-
So when her tale of days all flownK
Thy mother shall be mist hereL
When Heaven at length shall claim its ownK
And angels snatch their sisterM
-
Some hoary headed friend perchanceH
May gaze with stifled breathN
And oft in momentary tranceH
Forget the waste of deathN
-
Ev'n thus a lovely rose I view'dO
In summer swelling prideP
Nor mark'd the bud that green and rudeO
Peep'd at the rose's sideP
-
It chanced I pass'd again that wayQ
In autumn's latest hourM
And wond'ring saw the selfsame sprayQ
Rich with the selfsame flowerM
-
Ah fond deceit the rude green budR
Alike in shape place nameD
Had bloom'd where bloom'd its parent studR
Another and the sameD
