MadamA
Long have I look'd my tablets o'erB
And find I've much to thank you forC
Outstanding debts beyond accountD
And new who knows to what amountD
Though small my wealth not small my soulE
Come then at once I'll pay the wholeE
Ye powers I'm rich and will commandF
The host of slaves that round me standF
Come Indian quick disclose thy storeC
And hither bring Peruvian oreC
Let yonder Negro pierce the mainG
The choicest largest pearl to gainG
Let all my slaves their art combineH
To make the blushing ruby mineH
From eastern thrones the diamonds bearI
To sparkle at her breast and earJ
Swift Scythian point the unerring dartK
That strikes the ermine's little heartK
And search for choicest furs the globeL
To make my Myrtilis a robeL
Ah no yon Indian will not goM
No Scythian designs to bed his bowN
No sullen Negro shoots the floodO
All all my empty power disownP
I turn and find myself aloneP
'Tis Fancy's vain illusion allQ
No Moor nor Scythian waits my callQ
Can I command can I consignH
Alas what earthly thing is mineH
Come then my Muse companion dearR
Of poverty and soul sincereR
Come dictate to my grateful mindS
A gift that may acceptance findS
Come gentle Muse and with thee bearI
An offering worthy thee and herB
And though thy presents be but poorT
My Myrtilis will ask no moreC
A Heart that scorns a shameful thingU
With love and verse is all I bringU
Of love and verse the gift receiveV
'Tis all thy servant has to giveW
If all whate'er my verse has toldX
Golconda's gems and Afric's goldX
If all were mine from pole to poleE
How large her share who shares my soulE
But more than these may Heaven impartK
Be thine the treasures of the heartK
Be calm and glad thy future daysY
With virtue's peace and virtue's praiseY
Let jealous pride and sleepless careI
And wasting grief and black despairI
And languor chill and anguish fellZ
For ever shun thy grove and cellZ
There only may the happy trainG
Of love and joy and peace remainG
May plenty with exhaustless storeC
Employ thy hand to feed the poorT
And ever on thy honour'd headA2
The prayer of gratitude be shedA2
A happy mother may'st thou seeB2
Thy smiling virtuous progenyB2
Whose sportful tricks and airy playC2
Fraternal love and prattle gayC2
Or wondrous tale or joyful songD2
May lure the lingering hours alongD2
Till death arrive unfelt unseenE2
With gentle pace and placid mienE2
And waft thee to that happy shoreC
Where wishes can have place no moreC
