In the far off sea there is many a spriteB
Who rests by day but awakes at nightB
In hidden caves where monsters creepC
When the sun is high these spectres sleepC
From the glance of noon they shrink with dreadD
And hide 'mid the bones of the ghastly deadD
Where the surf is hushed and the light is dullE
In the hollow tube and the whitened skullE
They crouch in fear or in whispers wailF
For the lingering night and the coming galeF
But at even tide when the shore is dimG
And bubbling wreaths with the billows swimG
They rise on the wing of the freshened breezeH
And flit with the wind o'er the rolling seasH

At summer eve as I sat on the cliffI
I marked a shape like a dusky skiffI
That skimmed the brine toward the rocky shoreJ
I heard a voice in the surge's roarJ
I saw a form in the flashing sprayK
And white arms beckoned me awayK
Away o'er the tide we went togetherL
Through shade and mist and stormy weatherL
Away away o'er the lonely waterL
On wings of thought like shadows we flewM
Nor paused 'mid scenes of wreck and slaughterL
That came from the blackened waves to viewM
The staggering ship to the gale we leftN
The drifting corse and the vacant boatO
The ghastly swimmer all hope bereftN
We left them there on the sea to floatO
Through mist and shade and stormy weatherL
That night we went to the icy PoleP
And there on the rocks we stood togetherL
And saw the ocean before us rollP
No moon shone down on the hermit seaQ
No cheering beacon illumed the shoreJ
No ship on the water no light on the leaQ
No sound in the ear but the billow's roarJ
But the wave was bright as if lit with pearlsR
And fearful things on its bosom playedS
Huge crakens circled in foamy whirlsR
As if the deep for their sport was madeS
And mighty whales through the crystal dashedT
And upward sent the far glittering sprayK
Till the darkened sky with the radiance flashedT
And pictured in glory the wild array AU

Hast thou seen the deep in the moonlight beamV
Its wave like a maiden's bosom swellingW
Hast thou seen the stars in the water's gleamV
As if its depths were their holy dwellingW
We met more beautiful scenes that nightB
As we slid along in our spirit carX
For we crossed the South Sea and ere the lightB
We doubled Cape Horn on a shooting starX
In our way we stooped o'er a moonlit isleY
Which the fairies had built in the lonely seaR
And the Surf Sprite's brow was bent with a smileY
As we gazed through the mist on their revelryR
The ripples that swept to the pebbly shoreJ
O'er shells of purple in wantonness playedS
And the whispering zephyrs sweet odors boreJ
From roses that bloomed amid silence and shadeS
In winding grottos with gems all brightB
Soft music trembled from harps unseenZ
And fair forms glided on wings of lightB
'Mid forests of fragrance and valleys of greenZ
There were voices of gladness the heart to beguileY
And glances of beauty too fond to be trueM
For the Surf Sprite shrieked and the Fairy IsleY
By the breath of the tempest was swept from our viewM

Then the howling gale o'er the billows rushedA2
And trampled the sea in its march of wrathB2
From stooping clouds the red lightnings gushedA2
And thunders moved in their blazing pathB2
'Twas a fearful night but my shadowy guideC2
Had a voice of glee as we rode on the galeF
For we saw afar a ship on the tideC2
With a bounding course and a fearless sailF
In darkness it came like a storm sent birdD2
But another ship it met on the waveM
A shock a shout but no more we heardD2
For they both went down to their ocean graveM
We paused on the misty wing of the stormE2
As a ruddy flash lit the face of the deepC
And far in its bosom full many a formE2
Was swinging down to its silent sleepC
Another flash and they seemed to restF2
In scattered groups on the floor of the tideC2
The lover and loved they were breast to breastF2
The mother and babe they were side by sideC2
The leaping waves clapped their hands in joyG2
And gleams of gold with the waters flowedH2
But the peace of the sleepers knew no alloyG2
For all was hushed in their lone abodeH2

On on like midnight visions we passedI2
The storm above and the surge belowJ2
And shrieking forms swept by on the blastI2
Like demons speeding on errands of woeJ2
My spirit sank for aloft in the cloudK2
A Star set Flag on the whirlwind flewM
And I knew that the billow must be the shroudK2
Of the noble ship and her gallant crewM
Her side was striped with a belt of whiteB
And a dozen guns from each battery frownedL2
But the lightning came in a sheet of flame BM
And the towering sails in its folds were woundL2
Vain vain was the shout that in battle routM2
Had rung as a knell in the ear of the foeJ2
For the bursting deck was heaved from the wreckN2
And the sky was bathed in the awful glowJ2
The ocean shook to its oozy bedD
As the swelling sound to the canopy wentO2
And the splintered fires like meteors shedD
Their light o'er the tossing elementP2
A moment they gleamed then sank in the foamQ2
And darkness swept over the gorgeous glareR2
They lighted the mariners down to their homeQ2
And left them all sleeping in stillness thereR2

The storm is hushed and my vision is o'erL
The Surf Sprite changed to a foamy wreathS2
The night is deepened along the shoreJ
And I thread my way o'er the dusky heathS2
But often again I shall go to that cliffM
And seek for her form on the flashing tideC2
For I know she will come in her airy skiffM
And over the sea we shall swiftly rideC2
