Far far o'er the deep is my island throneA
Where the sea gull roams and reigns aloneA
Where nought is seen but the beetling rockB
And nought is heard but the ocean shockB
And the scream of birds when the storm is nighC
And the crash of the wreck and the fearful cryC
Of drowning men in their agonyD
I love to sit when the waters sleepE
And ponder the depths of the glassy deepE
Till I dream that I float on a corse at seaD
And sing of the feast that is made for meD
I love on the rush of the storm to sailF
And mingle my scream with the hoarser galeF
When the sky is dark and the billow highC
When the tempest sweeps in its terror byC
I love to ride on the maddening blastG
To flap my wing o'er the fated mastG
And sing to the crew a song of fearH
Of the reef and the surge that await them hereI
-
When the storm is done and the revel is o'erJ
I love to sit on the rocky shoreK
And tell to the ear of the dying breezeL
The tales that are hushed in the sullen seasL
Of the ship that sank in the reefy surgeM
And left her fate to the sea gull's dirgeM
Of the lover that sailed to meet his brideN
And his story gave to the secret tideN
Of the father that went on the trustless mainO
And never was met by his child againP
Of the hidden things which the waves concealQ
And the sea bird's song can alone revealQ
-
I tell of the ship that hath found a graveR
Her spars still float on the restless waveR
But down in the halls of the voiceless deepE
The forms of the brave and the beautiful sleepE
I saw the storm as it gathered fastG
I heard the roar of the coming blastG
I marked the ship in her fearful strifeS
As she flew on the tide like a thing of lifeS
But the whirlwind came and her masts were wrungT
Away and away on the waters flungT
I sat on the gale o'er the sea swept deckU
And screamed in delight o'er the coming wreckU
I flew to the reef with a heart of gleeD
And wiled the ship to her destinyD
On the hidden rocks like a hawk she rushedV
And the sea through her riven timbers gushedV
O'er the whirling surge the wreck was flungT
And loud on the gale wild voices rungT
I gazed on the scene I saw despairW
On the pallid brows of a youthful pairW
The maiden drooped like a gentle flowerJ
When lashed by the gale in its quivering bowerJ
Her arms round her lover she wildly twinedX
And gazed on the sea with a wildered mindX
He bent o'er the trembler and sheltered her formY
From the plash of the sea and the sweep of the stormY
But woe to the lover and woe to the maidZ
Whose hopes on the treacherous deep are laidZ
For the Sea hath a King whose palaces shineA2
In lustre and light down the pearly brineA2
And he loves to gather in glory thereW
The choicest things of the earth and airW
In his deep saloons with coral crownedB2
Where gems are sparkling above and aroundB2
He gathers his harem of love and graceC2
And beauty he takes to his cold embraceC2
The winds and the waves are his messengers trueD2
And lost is the wanderer whom they pursueD2
They sweep the shore they plunder the wreckU
His stores to heap and his halls to deckU
Oh lady and lover ye are doomed their preyE2
They come they come ye are swept awayE2
Ye sink in the tide but it cannot severJ
The fond ones who sleep in its depths for everJ
-
Wild wild was the storm and loud was its roarK
And strange were the sights that I hovered o'erJ
I saw the babe with its mother dieC
I listened to catch its parting sighC
And I laughed to see the black billows playE2
With the sleeping child in their gambols gayE2
I saw a girl whose arms were whiteF2
As the foam that flashed on the billows' heightF2
And the ripples played with her glossy curlsG2
And her cheek was kissed by the dancing whirlsG2
But her bosom was dead to hope and fearH
For she shuddered not as the shark came nearH
I poised my foot on the forehead fairW
Of a lovely boy that floated thereW
I looked in the eyes of the drowning braveR
As they upward gazed through the glassy waveR
I screamed o'er the bubbles that told of deathH2
And stooped as the last gave up his breathH2
I flapped my wing for the work was doneI2
The storm was hushed and the laughing sunI2
Sent his gushing light o'er the sullen seasG2
And I tell my tale to the fainting breezeG2
Of the hidden things which the waves concealQ
And the sea bird's song can alone revealQ
