The Mountain Stream. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBACAA DEDEEDEDD FGFGGFGFF HHHHHHHHH IJIJJIJII KHKHHKHKK

One summer morn while yet the thrilling layA
Of the dew loving lark was full and strongB
Trampling the wild flowers in my careless wayA
Up the steep mountain side I strode alongB
My only guide a brook whose joyous songB
Seemed like a boy's light hearted roundelayA
As down it rushed the leafy bowers amongC
Scattering o'er bud and bloom its pearly sprayA
A beauteous semblance of life's opening dayA
-
And looking back to that all gladdening mornD
When I was free and sportive as the streamE
When roses blushed with no suspected thornD
And fancy's sunlight gilded every dreamE
While hope yet shed its sweet delusive beamE
And disappointment still delayed to warnD
With fond regret I still pursued the themeE
With clambering step still up the steep was borneD
Too sad to smile too pleased perchance to mournD
-
And now I stood beside that rivulet's springF
That came unbidden with a bubbling boundG
And stealing forth a gentle trembling thingF
It seemed an infant fearing all aroundG
Yet clinging to its mother's breast the groundG
But soon it bolder grew and with a wingF
It went its carol was a joyous soundG
Making the silent woods responsive ringF
And the far forest echoes sighing singF
-
And now I stood upon the mountain's heightH
Like a wide map the landscape lay unrolledH
There could I trace that rivulet's path of lightH
From the steep mountain to the sea of goldH
Now leaping o'er the rocks like chamois boldH
Now like a crouching hare concealed from sightH
Now hid beneath the willow's bowering foldH
As if they sought to stay its arrowy flightH
Then give it forth again more swift and brightH
-
'Twas changeful beautiful now dark now fairI
A tale of life from childhood to the tombJ
Its birth place near the skies in mountain airI
Where wild flowers throw around their sweet perfumeJ
Like the blest thoughts that often brightly bloomJ
At home beneath a mother's culturing careI
Its form now hid in shadows such as gloomJ
Our downward way its grave in ocean whereI
It mingles with the wave a dweller thereI
-
And though that stream be hidden from the viewK
'Tis yet preserved 'neath ocean's briny crestH
That wide eternity of waves is trueK
And as the planets anchored in their restH
The sparkling streamlet lives and while unblestH
The land wave stagnant lingers there the blueK
Tide holds the river stainless in its breastH
An image still of life that sparkles throughK
The starry deep of heaven for ever newK
