As a shadow He flew but sorrow and wailB
Came up from his path like the moan of the galeB
His quiver was full though his arrows fell fastC
As the sharp hail of winter when urged by the blastC
He smiled on each shaft as it flew from the stringD
Though feathered by fate and the lightning its wingD
Unerring unsparing it sped to its markE
As the mandate of destiny certain and darkE
The mail of the warrior it severed in twainF
The wall of the castle it shivered amainF
No shield could shelter no prayer could saveG
And Love's holy shrine no immunity gaveG
A babe in the cradle its mother bent o'erH
The arrow is sped and that babe is no moreI
At the faith plighting altar a lovely one bowsJ
The gem on her finger in Heaven her vowsJ
Unseen is the blow but she sinks in the crowdK
And her bright wedding garment is turned to a shroudK

On flew the Destroyer o'er mountain and mainF
And where there was life there there are the slainF
No valley so deep no islet so loneF
But his shadow is cast and his victims are knownF
He paused not though years rolled weary and slowL
And Time's hoary pinion drooped languid and lowL
He paused not till Man from his birth place was sweptM
And the sea and the land in solitude sleptM

On a mountain he stood for the struggle was doneF
A smile on his lip for the victory wonF
The city of millions lone islet and caveG
The home of the hermit all earth was a graveG
The last of his race where the first saw the lightN
The monarch had met and triumphed in fightN
Swift swift was the steed o'er Shinar's wide sandO
But swifter the arrow that flew from Death's handO

O'er the mountain he seems like a tempest to lowerH
Triumphant and dark in the fulness of powerH
And flashes of flame that play round his crestP
Bespeak the fierce lightning that glows in his breastP
But a vision of wonder breaks now on his sightN
The blue vault of heaven is gushing with lightN
And facing the tyrant a form from the skyA
Returns the fierce glance of his challenging eyeA
A moment they pause two princes of mightN
The Demon of Darkness an Angel of LightN
Each gazes on each no barrier betweenF
And the quivering rocks shrink aghast from the sceneF
The sword of the angel waves free in the airQ
Death looks to his quiver no arrow is thereQ
He falls like a pyramid crumbled and tornF
And a vision of light on his dying eye borneF
In glory reveals the blest souls of the slainF
And he sees that his sceptre was transient and vainF
For 'mid the bright throng e'en the infant he slewR
And the altar struck bride beam full on the viewR
