Twas morn and wending on its wayA
Beside my path a stream was playingB
And down its banks in humor gayA
A thoughtless boy was idly strayingB
-
Light as the breeze they onward flewC
That joyous youth and laughing tideD
And seemed each other's course to wooC
For long they bounded side by sideD
-
And now the dimpling water staidE
And glassed its ripples in a nookF
And on its breast a bubble playedE
Which won the boy's admiring lookF
-
He bent him o'er the river's brimG
And on the radiant vision gazedH
For lovelier still it seemed to himG
That in its breast his imaged blazedH
-
With beating heart and trembling fingerI
He stooped the wondrous gem to claspJ
But spellbound seemed a while to lingerI
Ere yet he made th' adventurous graspJ
-
And still a while the glittering toyK
Coquettish seemed to shun the snareL
And then more eager grew the boyK
And followed with impetuous airL
-
Round and around with heedful eyesM
He chased it o'er the wavy riverI
He marked his time and seized his prizeM
But in his hand it burst for everI
-
Upon the river's marge he sateN
The tears adown his young cheek gushingB
And long his heart disconsolateN
He heeded not the river's rushingB
-
But tears will cease And now the boyK
Once more looked forth upon the streamO
'Twas morning still and lo a toyK
Bright as the last one in the beamO
-
He rose pursued the bubble caughtN
It burst he sighed then others chasedN
And as I parted still he soughtN
New bubbles in their downward hasteN
-
My onward path I still pursuedN
Till the high noontide sun was o'er meP
And now though changed in form and moodN
That Youth and river seemed before meP
-
The deepened stream more proudly sweptN
Though chafed by many a vessel's prowQ
The Youth in manhood's vigor steptN
But care was chiselled on his browQ
-
Still on the stream he kept his eyeR
And wooed the bubbles to the shoreS
And snatched them as they circled byR
Though bursting as they burst beforeS
-
Once more we parted Yet againT
We met though now 'twas evening dimG
Onward the waters rushed amainT
And vanished o'er a cataract's brimG
-
Though swift and dark the raging surgeU
The Bubble Chaser still was thereL
And bending o'er the dizzy vergeU
Clutched at the gaudy things of airL
-
With staff in hand and tottering kneeT
Upon the slippery brink he stoodN
And watched with doting ecstasyT
Each wreath of foam that rode the floodN
-
One bubble more I heard him callV
And saw his trembling fingers playA
He snatched and down the roaring fallV
With the lost bubble passed awayA
