Lake Superior. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM ENDN BOBO POPOFather of Lakes thy waters bend | A |
Beyond the eagle's utmost view | B |
When throned in heaven he sees thee send | A |
Back to the sky its world of blue | B |
- | |
Boundless and deep the forests weave | C |
Their twilight shade thy borders o'er | D |
And threatening cliffs like giants heave | C |
Their rugged forms along thy shore | E |
- | |
Nor can the light canoes that glide | F |
Across thy breast like things of air | G |
Chase from thy lone and level tide | F |
The spell of stillness deepening there | G |
- | |
Yet round this waste of wood and wave | H |
Unheard unseen a spirit lives | I |
That breathing o'er each rock and cave | H |
To all a wild strange aspect gives | I |
- | |
The thunder riven oak that flings | J |
Its grisly arms athwart the sky | K |
A sudden startling image brings | J |
To the lone traveller's kindled eye | K |
- | |
The gnarled and braided boughs that show | L |
Their dim forms in the forest shade | M |
Like wrestling serpents seem and throw | L |
Fantastic horrors through the glade | M |
- | |
The very echoes round this shore | E |
Have caught a strange and gibbering tone | N |
For they have told the war whoop o'er | D |
Till the wild chorus is their own | N |
- | |
Wave of the wilderness adieu | B |
Adieu ye rocks ye wilds ye woods | O |
Roll on thou Element of blue | B |
And fill these awful solitudes | O |
- | |
Thou hast no tale to tell of man | P |
God is thy theme Ye sounding caves | O |
Whisper of Him whose mighty plan | P |
Deems as a bubble all your waves | O |
