Lake Superior. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM ENDN BOBO POPO

Father of Lakes thy waters bendA
Beyond the eagle's utmost viewB
When throned in heaven he sees thee sendA
Back to the sky its world of blueB
-
Boundless and deep the forests weaveC
Their twilight shade thy borders o'erD
And threatening cliffs like giants heaveC
Their rugged forms along thy shoreE
-
Nor can the light canoes that glideF
Across thy breast like things of airG
Chase from thy lone and level tideF
The spell of stillness deepening thereG
-
Yet round this waste of wood and waveH
Unheard unseen a spirit livesI
That breathing o'er each rock and caveH
To all a wild strange aspect givesI
-
The thunder riven oak that flingsJ
Its grisly arms athwart the skyK
A sudden startling image bringsJ
To the lone traveller's kindled eyeK
-
The gnarled and braided boughs that showL
Their dim forms in the forest shadeM
Like wrestling serpents seem and throwL
Fantastic horrors through the gladeM
-
The very echoes round this shoreE
Have caught a strange and gibbering toneN
For they have told the war whoop o'erD
Till the wild chorus is their ownN
-
Wave of the wilderness adieuB
Adieu ye rocks ye wilds ye woodsO
Roll on thou Element of blueB
And fill these awful solitudesO
-
Thou hast no tale to tell of manP
God is thy theme Ye sounding cavesO
Whisper of Him whose mighty planP
Deems as a bubble all your wavesO
