A Burial At Sea. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JKJK LMLM GNGN EMEM

The shore hath blent with the distant skiesA
O'er the bend of the crested seasB
And the leaning ship in her pathway fliesA
On the sweep of the freshened breezeB
-
Swift be its flight for a dying guestC
It bears across the billowD
And she fondly sighs in her native WestC
To find a peaceful pillowD
-
There o'er the tide her kindred sleepE
And she would sleep beside themF
It may not be for the sea is deepE
And the waves the waves divide themF
-
It may not be for the flush is flownG
That lighted her lily cheekH
'Twas the passing beam ere the sun goes downI
Life's last and loveliest streakH
-
'Tis gone and a dew is o'er her nowJ
The dew of the mornless eveK
No morrow will shine on that pallid browJ
For the spirit hath ta'en its leaveK
-
-
-
The ship heaves to and the funeral riteL
O'er the lovely form is saidM
And the rough man's cheek with tears is brightL
As he lowers the gentle deadM
-
The corse sinks down alone aloneG
To its dark and dreary graveN
And the soul on a lightened wing hath flownG
To the world beyond the waveN
-
-
-
'Tis a fearful thing in the sea to sleepE
Alone in a silent bedM
'Tis a fearful thing on the shoreless deepE
Of the spirit world to treadM
