The Gods Ash Their Cigarettes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKJLMNOPMQ

Death stepped out of the televisionA
just long enough to catch us off guardB
and we mill around a crematorium's lawnsC
'I saw her on Friday now she's gone 'D
The women cry and hug menE
shuddering at the taste of ashesF
A smile between friends it could haveG
been you and me last summer in the accidentH
We were suitably dressed even the sky was greyI
We bull ants terrified of sadistic feetJ
on a footpath curse the gods look in the other'sK
eyes then look beyond to the feetJ
The keepers of the place tell us to hurryL
along make space for the incoming carsM
They can't care it's a living to themN
but our hearts turn against black hearted fateO
We kick the backs of each other's shoesP
and hands in pockets shuffle back to our carsM
Suddenly her blonde hair her faceQ
