Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC ABABBCBC ABABBCBC ABABBCBC

They bear in place of classic namesA
Letters and numbers on their skinB
They play their grisly blindfold gamesA
In little boxes made of tinB
Sometimes they stalk the ZeppelinB
Sometimes they learn where mines are laidC
Or where the Baltic ice is thinB
That is the custom of The TradeC
-
Few prize courts sit upon their claimsA
They seldom tow their targets inB
They follow certain secret aimsA
Down under Far from strife or dinB
When they are ready to beginB
No flag is flown no fuss is madeC
More than the shearing of a pinB
That is the custom of The TradeC
-
The Scout's quadruple funnel flamesA
A mark from Sweden to the SwinB
The Cruiser's thund'rous screw proclaimsA
Her comings out and goings inB
But only whiffs of paraffinB
Or creamy rings that fizz and fadeC
Show where the one eyed Death has beenB
That is the custom of The TradeC
-
Their feats their fortunes and their famesA
Are hidden from their nearest kinB
No eager public backs or blamesA
No journal prints the yarn they spinB
The Censor would not let it inB
When they return from run or raidC
Unheard they work unseen they winB
That is the custom of The TradeC
