In their deepest caverns of limestoneA
They pictured the Gods of FoodB
The Horse the Elk and the BisonC
That the hunting might be goodD
With the Gods of Death and TerrorE
The Mammoth Tiger and BearF
And the pictures moved in the torchlightD
To show that the Gods were thereF
But that was before IoniaC
Or the Seven Holy Islands of IoniaC
Any of the Mountains of IoniaC
Had bared their peaks to the airF
-
The close years packed behind themG
As the glaciers bite and grindD
Filling the new gouged valleysH
With Gods of every kindD
Gods of all reaching powerE
Gods of all searching eyesI
But each to be wooed by worshipJ
And won by sacrificeK
Till after many winters rose IoniaC
Strange men brooding in IoniaC
Crystal eyed Sages of IoniaC
Who said quot These tales are liesI
-
quot We dream one Breath in all thingsL
quot That blows all things betweenC
quot We dream one Matter in all thingsL
quot Eternal changeless unseenC
quot 'That the heart of the Matter is singleM
quot Till the Breath shall bid it bring forthN
quot By choosing or losing its neighbourE
quot All things made upon Earth quotD
But Earth was wiser than IoniaC
Babylon and Egypt than IoniaC
And they overlaid the teaching of IoniaC
And the Truth was choked at birthO
-
It died at the Gate of KnowledgeP
The Key to the Gate in its handD
And the anxious priests and wizardsQ
Re blinded the wakening landD
For they showed by answering echoesR
And chasing clouds as they roseR
How shadows should stand for bulwarksR
Between mankind and its woesR
It was then that men bethought them of IoniaC
The few that had not allforgot IoniaC
Or the Word that was whispered in IoniaC
And they turned from the shadows and the showsR
-
They found one Breath in all thingsR
That moves all things betweenC
They proved one Matter in all thingsR
Eternal changeless unseenC
That the heart of the Matter was singleM
Till the Breath should bid it bring forthN
Even as men whispered in IoniaC
Resolute unsatisfied IoniaC
Ere the Word was stifled in IoniaC
All things known upon earthO
