The Stranger Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDB EFGFHF IJKLMN EOPOQO RSRSTS

The Stranger within my gateA
He may be true or kindB
But he does not talk my talkC
I cannot feel his mindB
I see the face and the eyes and the mouthD
But not the soul behindB
-
The men of my own stockE
They may do ill or wellF
But they tell the lies I am wanted toG
They are used to the lies I tellF
And we do not need interpretersH
When we go to buy or sellF
-
The Stranger within my gatesI
He may be evil or goodJ
But I cannot tell what powers controlK
What reasons sway his moodL
Nor when the Gods of his far off landM
Shall repossess his bloodN
-
The men of my own stockE
Bitter bad they may beO
But at least they hear the things I hearP
And see the things I seeO
And whatever I think of them and their likesQ
They think of the likes of meO
-
This was my father's beliefR
And this is also mineS
Let the corn be all one sheafR
And the grapes be all one vineS
Ere our children's teeth are set on edgeT
By bitter bread and wineS
