The Servant When He Reigneth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCABEBAFBFBBEB BGFGHBBB HIHIAAEA FBFBJKEK

For three things the earth is disquieted and for four which it cannot bear For a servant when he reigneth and a fool when he is filled with meat for an odious woman when she is married and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress Prov XXXA
-
-
Three things make earth unquietB
And four she cannot brookC
The godly Agur counted themD
And put them in a bookC
Those Four Tremendous CursesA
With which mankind is cursedB
But a Servant when He ReignethE
Old Agur entered firstB
An Handmaid that is MistressA
We need not call uponF
A Fool when he is full of MeatB
Will fall asleep anonF
An Odious Woman MarriedB
May bear a babe and mendB
But a Servant when He ReignethE
Is Confusion to the endB
-
His feet are swift to tumultB
His hands are slow to toilG
His ears are deaf to reasonF
His lips are loud in broilG
He knows no use for powerH
Except to show his mightB
He gives no heed to judgmentB
Unless it prove him rightB
-
Because he served a masterH
Before his Kingship cameI
And hid in all disasterH
Behind his master's nameI
So when his Folly opensA
The unnecessary hellsA
A Servant when He ReignethE
Throws the blame on some one elseA
-
His vows are lightly spokenF
His faith is hard to bindB
His trust is easy bokenF
He fears his fellow kindB
The nearest mob will move himJ
To break the pledge he gaveK
Oh a Servant when he ReignethE
Is more than ever slaveK
