Peace is declared and I returnA
To 'Ackneystadt but not the sameB
Things 'ave transpired which made me learnA
The size and meanin' of the gameB
I did no more than others didC
I don't know where the change beganD
I started as a average kidC
I finished as a thinkin' manD
-
If England was what England seemsE
An' not the England of our dreamsE
But only putty brass an' paintF
'Ow quick we'd drop 'er But she ain'tF
-
Before my gappin' mouth could speakG
I 'eard it in my comrade's toneH
I saw it on my neighbour's cheekG
Before I felt it flush my ownH
An' last it come to me not prideI
Nor yet conceit but on the 'oleJ
If such a term may be appliedI
The makin's of a bloomin' soulJ
-
Rivers at night that cluck an' jeerK
Plains which the moonshine turns to seaL
Mountains that never let you nearK
An' stars to all eternityL
An' the quick breathin' dark that fillsM
The 'ollows of the wildernessN
When the wind worries through the 'illsN
These may 'ave taught me more or lessN
-
Towns without people ten times tookO
An' ten times left an' burned at lastP
An' starvin' dogs that come to lookO
For owners when a column passedP
An' quiet 'omesick talks betweenQ
Men met by night you never knewR
Until 'is face by shellfire seenQ
Once an' struck off They taught me tooR
-
The day's lay out the mornin' sunS
Beneath your 'at brim as you sightT
The dinner 'ush from noon till oneS
An' the full roar that lasts till nightT
An' the pore dead that look so oldU
An' was so young an hour agoV
An' legs tied down before they're coldU
These are the things which make you knowV
-
Also Time runnin' into yearsN
A thousand Places left be'indU
An' Men from both two 'emispheresN
Discussin' things of every kindU
So much more near than I 'ad knownH
So much more great than I 'ad guessedU
An' me like all the rest aloneH
But reachin' out to all the restU
-
So 'ath it come to me not prideU
Nor yet conceit but on the 'oleJ
If such a term may be appliedU
The makin's of a bloomin' soulJ
But now discharged I fall awayW
To do with little things againX
Gawd 'oo knows all I cannot sayW
Look after me in ThamesfonteinX
-
If England was what England seemsN
An' not the England of our dreamsN
But only putty brass an' paintU
'Ow quick we'd chuck 'er But she ain'tU
