The Quest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCDCEFGF HIHIICDC JKLMMCDC ENENOPQPEFGF

The knight came home from the questA
Muddied and sore he cameB
Battered of shield and crestA
Bannerless bruised and lameB
Fighting we take no shameB
Better is man for a fallC
Merrily borne the bugle hornD
Answered the warder's callC
Here is my lance to mend HaroE
Here is my horse to be shotF
Ay they were strong and the fight was longG
But I paid as good as I gotF
-
Oh dark and deep their vanH
That mocked my battle cryI
I could not miss my manH
But I could not carry byI
Utterly whelmed was II
Flung under horse and allC
Merrily borne the bugle hornD
Answered the warder's callC
-
My wounds are noised abroadJ
But theirs my foemen cloakedK
Ye see my broken swordL
But never the blades she brokeM
Paying them stroke for strokeM
Good handsel over allC
Merrily borne the bugle hornD
Answered the warder's callC
-
My shame ye count and knowE
Ye say the quest is vainN
Ye have not seen my foeE
Ye have not told his slainN
Surely he fights again againO
But when ye prove his lineP
There shall come to your aid my broken bladeQ
In the last lost fight of mineP
And here is my lance to mend HaroE
And here is my horse to be shotF
Ay they were strong and the fight was longG
But I paid as good as I gotF
