A
-
-
Through learned and laborious yearsB
They set themselves to findC
Fresh terrors and undreamed of fearsB
To heap upon mankindC
-
ALl that they drew from Heaven aboveD
Or digged from earth beneathE
They laid into their treasure troveF
And arsenals of deathG
-
While for well weighed advantage sakeH
Ruler and ruled alikeI
Built up the faith they meant to breakH
When the fit hour should strikeI
-
They traded with the careless earthJ
And good return it gaveK
They plotted by their neighbour's hearthL
The means to make him slaveK
-
When all was ready to their handM
They loosed their hidden swordN
And utterly laid waste a landM
Their oath was pledged to guardO
-
Coldly they went about to raiseP
To life and make more dreadQ
Abominations of old daysP
That men believed were deadQ
-
They paid the price to reach their goalR
Across a world in flameS
But their own hate slew their own soulR
Before that victory cameS
