O woe is me for the merry lifeA
I led beyond the BarB
And a treble woe for my winsome wifeA
That weeps at ShalimarB
-
They have taken away my long jezailC
My shield and sabre fineD
And heaved me into the Central jailC
For lifting of the kineD
-
The steer may low within the byreB
The Jat may tend his grainD
But there'll be neither loot nor fireB
Till I come back againD
-
And God have mercy on the JatE
When once my fetters fallC
And Heaven defend the farmer's hutE
When I am loosed from thrallC
-
It's woe to bend the stubborn backF
Above the grinching quernD
It's woe to hear the leg bar clackF
And jingle when I turnD
-
But for the sorrow and the shameG
The brand on me and mineD
I'll pay you back in leaping flameG
And loss of the butchered kineD
-
For every cow I spared beforeB
In charity set freeB
If I may reach my hold once moreB
I'll reive an honest threeB
-
For every time I raised the lowC
That scared the dusty plainD
By sword and cord by torch and towC
I'll light the land with twainD
-
Ride hard ride hard to AbazaiH
Young Sahib with the yellow hairB
Lie close lie close as khuttucks lieC
Fat herds below BonairB
-
The one I'll shoot at twilight tideE
At dawn I'll drive the otherB
The black shall mourn for hoof and hideE
The white man for his brotherB
-
'Tis war red war I'll give you thenD
War till my sinews failC
For the wrong you have done to a chief of menD
And a thief of the Zukka KheylC
-
And if I fall to your hand afreshI
I give you leave for the sinD
That you cram my throat with the foul pig's fleshI
And swing me in the skinD
