Through the Plagues of Egyp' we was chasin' ArabiA
Gettin' down an' shovin' in the sunB
An' you might 'ave called us dirty an' you might ha' called us dryC
An' you might 'ave 'eard us talkin' at the gunB
But the Captain 'ad 'is jacket an' the jacket it was newD
'Orse Gunners listen to my songE
An' the wettin' of the jacket is the proper thing to doD
Nor we didn't keep 'im waitin' very longE
-
One day they gave us orders for to shell a sand redoubtF
Loadin' down the axle arms with caseG
But the Captain knew 'is dooty an' he took the crackers outF
An' he put some proper liquor in its placeG
An' the Captain saw the shrapnel which is six an' thirty clearH
'Orse Gunners listen to my songE
quot Will you draw the weight quot sez 'e quot or will you draw the beer quotF
An' we didn't keep 'im waitin' very longE
For the Captain etcI
-
Then we trotted gentle not to break the bloomin' glassJ
Though the Arabites 'ad all their ranges markedF
But we dursn't 'ardly gallop for the most was bottled BassJ
An' we'd dreamed of it since we was disembarkedF
So we fired economic with the shells we 'ad in 'andF
'Orse Gunners listen to my songE
But the beggars under cover 'ad the impidence to standF
An' we couldn't keep 'em waitin' very longE
And the Captain etcI
-
So we finished 'arf the liquor an' the Captain took champagneK
An' the Arabites was shootin' all the whileL
An' we left our wounded 'appy with the empties on the plainK
An' we used the bloomin' guns for pro jec tileL
We limbered up an' galloped there were nothin' else to doF
'Orse Gunners listen to my songE
An' the Battery came a boundin' like a boundin' kangarooF
But they didn't watch us comin' very longE
As the Captain etcI
-
We was goin' most extended we was drivin' very fineM
An' the Arabites were loosin' 'igh an' wideF
Till the Captain took the glassy with a rattlin' right inclineM
An' we dropped upon their 'eads the other sideF
Then we give 'em quarter such as 'adn't up and cutF
'Orse Gunners listen to my songE
An' the Captain stood a limberful of fizzy somethin' BruttF
But we didn't leave it fizzing very longE
For the Captain etcI
-
We might ha' been court martialled but it all come out all rightF
When they signalled us to join the main commandF
There was every round expended there was every gunner tightF
An' the Captain waved a corkscrew in 'is 'andF
But the Captain 'ad 'is jacket etcI
