The Heritage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDF GHIHJKJK LMLNOPOP QIQIRSRS TUTUVWNW

Our Fathers in a wondrous ageA
Ere yet the Earth was smallB
Ensured to us a heritageC
And doubted not at allB
That we the children of their heartD
Which then did beat so highE
In later rime should play like partD
For our posterityF
-
A thousand years they steadfast builtG
To 'vantage us and oursH
The Walls that were a world's despairI
The sea constraining TowersH
Yet in their midmost pride they knewJ
And unto Kings made knownK
Not all from these their strength they drewJ
Their faith from brass or stoneK
-
Youth's passion manhood's fierce intentL
With age's judgment wiseM
They spent and counted not they spentL
At daily sacrificeN
Not lambs alone nor purchased dovesO
Or tithe of trader's goldP
Their lives most dear their dearer lovesO
They offered up of oldP
-
Refraining e'en from lawful thingsQ
They bowed the neck to bearI
The unadorned yoke that bringsQ
Stark toil and sternest careI
Wherefore through them is Freedom sureR
Wherefore through them we standS
From all but sloth and pride secureR
In a delightsome landS
-
Then fretful murmur not they gaveT
So great a charge to keepU
Nor dream that awestruck Time shall saveT
Their labour while we sleepU
Dear bought and clear a thousand yearV
Our fathers' title runsW
Make we likewise their sacrificeN
Defrauding not our sonsW
