The Floods Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDB EBEBFFDB GBGBHHDB IBIBJJDB KBKBLLDB

The rain it rains without a stayA
In the hills above us in the hillsB
And presently the floods break wayA
Whose strength is in the hillsB
The trees they suck from every cloudC
The valley brooks they roar aloudC
Bank high for the lowlands lowlandsD
Lowlands under the hillsB
-
The first wood down is sere and smallE
From the hills the brishings off the hillsB
And then come by the bats and allE
We cut last year in the hillsB
And then the roots we tried to cleaveF
But found too tough and had to leaveF
Polting down the lowlands lowlandsD
Lowlands under the hillsB
-
The eye shall look the ear shall harkG
To the hills the doings in the hillsB
And rivers mating in the darkG
With tokens from the hillsB
Now what is weak will surely goH
And what is strong must prove it soH
Stand Fast in the lowlands lowlandsD
Lowlands under the hillsB
-
The floods they shall not be afraidI
Nor the hills above 'em nor the hillsB
Of any fence which man has madeI
Betwixt him and the hillsB
The waters shall not reckon twiceJ
For any work of man's deviceJ
But bid it down to the lowlands lowlandsD
Lowlands under the hillsB
-
The floods shall sweep corruption cleanK
By the hills the blessing of the hillsB
That more the meadows may be greenK
New mended from the hillsB
The crops and cattle shall increaseL
Nor little children shall not ceaseL
Go plough the lowlands lowlandsD
Lowlands under the hillsB
