-
We were all one heart and one raceB
When the Abbey trumpets blewC
For a moment's breathing spaceB
We had forgotten youC
Now you return to your honoured placeB
Panting to shame us anewC
-
We have walked with the Ages deadD
With our Past alive and ablazeE
And you bid us pawn our honour for breadD
This day of all the daysE
And you cannot wait till our guests are spedD
Or last week's wreath decaysE
-
The light is still in our eyesF
Of Faith and GentlehoodD
Of Service and SacrificeG
And it does not match our moodD
To turn so soon to your treacheriesG
That starve our land of her foodD
-
Our ears still carry the soundD
Of our once Imperial seasG
Exultant after our King was crownedD
Beneath the sun and the breezeG
It is too early to have them boundD
Or sold at your decreesG
-
Wait till the memory goesG
Wait till the visions fadeD
We may betray in time God knowsG
But we would not have it saidD
When you make report to our scornful foesG
That we kissed as we betrayedD
