The Coiner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCD EEBB EEFF GGHH BBAA AAAA AAFA IIAA J

To be sung by the unlearned to the tune of quot King John and the Abbot of Canterbury quot and by the learned to quot Tempest a brewing quotA
-
-
Aga inst the Bermudas we foundered wherebyB
This Master that Swabber yon Bo'sun and IB
Our pinnace and crew being drowned in the mainC
Must beg for our bread through old England againD
-
For a bite and a sup and a bed of clean strawE
We'll tell you such marvels as man never sawE
On a Magical Island which no one did spyB
Save this Master that Swabber yon Bo'sun and IB
-
Seven months among Mermaids and Devils and SpritesE
And Voices that howl in the cedars o'nightsE
With further enchantments we underwent thereF
Good Sirs 'tis a tale to draw guts from a bearF
-
'Twixt Dover and Southwark it paid us our wayG
Where we found some poor players were labouring a playG
And willing to search what such business might beH
We entered the yard both to hear and to seeH
-
One hailed us for seamen and courteous lyB
Did guide us apart to a tavern near byB
Where we told him our tale as to many of lateA
And he gave us good cheer so we gave him good weightA
-
Mulled sack and strong waters on bellies well linedA
With beef and black pudding do strengthen the mindA
And seeing him greedy for marvels at lastA
From plain salted truth to flat leasing we passedA
-
But he when on midnight our reckoning he paidA
Says quot Never match coins with a Coiner by tradeA
Or he'll turn your lead pieces to metal as rareF
As shall fill him this globe and leave something to spare quotA
-
We slept where they laid us and when we awokeI
Was a crown or five shillings in every man's pokeI
We bit them and rang them and finding them goodA
We drank to that Coiner as honest men shouldA
-
For a cup and a crust and a truss etcJ
