Ah What avails the classic bentA
And what the cultured wordB
Against the undoctored incidentC
That actually occurredB
-
And what is Art whereto we pressD
Through paint and prose and rhymeE
When Nature in her nakednessD
Defeats us every timeE
-
It is not learning grace nor gearF
Nor easy meat and drinkG
But bitter pinch of pain and fearF
That makes creation thinkG
-
-
When in this world's unpleasing youthH
Our godlike race beganI
The longest arm the sharpest toothH
Gave man control of manI
-
-
Till bruised and bitten to the boneJ
And taught by pain and fearF
He learned to deal the far off stoneJ
And poke the long safe spearF
-
So tooth and nail were obsoleteK
As means against a foeL
Till bored by uniform defeatK
Some genius built the bowM
-
Then stone and javelin proved as vainN
As old time tooth and nailO
Till spurred anew by fear and painN
Man fashioned coats of mailO
-
Then was there safety for the richP
And danger for the poorQ
Till someone mixed a powder whichP
Redressed the scale once moreR
-
Helmet and armour disappearedS
With sword and bow and pikeT
And when the smoke of battle clearedS
All men were armed alikeT
-
And when ten million such were slainN
To please one crazy kingU
Man schooled in bulk by fear and painN
Grew weary of the thingU
-
And at the very hour designedV
To enslave him past recallW
His tooth stone arrow gun shy mindV
Turned and abolished allW
-
All Power each Tyrant every MobX
Whose head has grown too largeY
Ends by destroying its own jobX
And works its own dischargeY
-
And Man whose mere necessitiesD
Move all things from his pathZ
Trembles meanwhile at their decreesD
And deprecates their wrathZ
