It was our war ship ClampherdownA
Would sweep the Channel cleanA
Wherefore she kept her hatches closeB
When the merry Channel chops aroseC
To save the bleached marineA
-
She had one bow gun of a hundred tonA
And a great stern gun besideD
They dipped their noses deep in the seaE
They racked their stays and stanchions freeE
In the wash of the wind whipped tideD
-
It was our war ship ClampherdownA
Fell in with a cruiser lightF
That carried the dainty Hotchkiss gunA
And a pair o' heels wherewith to runA
From the grip of a close fought fightF
-
She opened fire at seven milesG
As ye shoot at a bobbing corkH
And once she fired and twice she firedI
Till the bow gun drooped like a lily tiredI
That lolls upon the stalkJ
-
quot Captain the bow gun melts apaceK
The deck beams break belowL
'Twere well to rest for an hour or twainA
And botch the shattered plates again quotI
And he answered quot Make it so quotI
-
She opened fire within the mileM
As ye shoot at the flying duckN
And the great stern gun shot fair and trueO
With the heave of the ship to the stainless blueO
And the great stern turret stuckN
-
quot Captain the turret fills with steamP
The feed pipes burst belowL
You can hear the hiss of the helpless ramQ
You can hear the twisted runners jam quotI
And he answered quot Turn and go quotI
-
It was our war ship ClampherdownA
And grimly did she rollR
Swung round to take the cruiser's fireS
As the White Whale faces the Thresher's ireT
When they war by the frozen PoleR
-
quot Captain the shells are falling fastI
And faster still fall weE
And it is not meet for English stockU
To bide in the heart of an eight day clockU
The death they cannot see quotI
-
quot Lie down lie down my bold A BE
We drift upon her beamP
We dare not ram for she can runA
And dare ye fire another gunA
And die in the peeling steam quotI
-
It was our war ship ClampherdownA
That carried an armour beltI
But fifty feet at stern and bowV
Lay bare as the paunch of the purser's sowV
To the hail of the NordenfeldtI
-
quot Captain they hack us through and throughO
The chilled steel bolts are swiftI
We have emptied the bunkers in open seaE
Their shrapnel bursts where our coal should be quotI
And he answered quot Let her drift quotI
-
It was our war ship ClampherdownA
Swung round upon the tideI
Her two dumb guns glared south and northW
And the blood and the bubbling steam ran forthW
And she ground the cruiser's sideI
-
quot Captain they cry the fight is doneA
They bid you send your sword quotI
And he answered quot Grapple her stern and bowV
They have asked for the steel They shall have it nowV
Out cutlasses and board quotI
-
It was our war ship ClampherdownV
Spewed up four hundred menV
And the scalded stokers yelped delightI
As they rolled in the waist and heard the fightI
Stamp o'er their steel walled penV
-
They cleared the cruiser end to endI
From conning tower to holdI
They fought as they fought in Nelson's fleetI
They were stripped to the waist they were bare to the feetI
As it was in the days of oldI
-
It was the sinking ClampherdownV
Heaved up her battered sideI
And carried a million pounds in steelX
To the cod and the corpse fed conger eelX
And the scour of the Channel tideI
-
It was the crew of the ClampherdownV
Stood out to sweep the seaE
On a cruiser won from an ancient foeL
As it was in the days of long agoL
And as it still shall beE
