Tarrant Moss Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DBBE FGFG HIHJ KLKL MNBN OCAC

I closed and drew for my love's sakeA
That now is false to meB
And I slew the Reiver of Tarrant MossC
And set Dumeny freeB
-
They have gone down they have gone downD
They are standing all arowB
Twenty knights in the peat waterB
That never struck a blowE
-
Their armour shall not dull nor rustF
Their flesh shall not decayG
For Tarrant Moss holds them in trustF
Until the Judgment DayG
-
Their soul went from them in their youthH
Ah God that mine had goneI
Whenas I leaned on my love's truthH
And not on my sword aloneJ
-
Whenas I leaned on lad's beliefK
And not on my naked bladeL
And I slew a thief and an honest thiefK
For the sake of a worthless maidL
-
They have laid the Reiver low in his placeM
They have set me up on highN
But the twenty knights in the peat waterB
Are luckier than IN
-
And ever they give me gold and praiseO
And ever I mourn my lossC
For I struck the blow for my false love's sakeA
And not for the Men of the MossC
