The general 'eard the firin' on the flankA
An' 'e sent a mounted man to bring 'im backB
The silly pushin' person's name an' rankA
'Oo'd dared to answer Brother Boer's attackB
For there might 'ave been a serious engagementC
An' 'e might 'ave wasted 'alf a dozen menD
So 'e ordered 'im to stop 'is operations round the kopjesE
An' 'e told 'im off before the Staff at tenD
And it all goes into the laundryF
But it never comes out in the washG
'Ow we're sugared about by the old menD
'Eavy sterned amateur old menD
That 'amper an' 'inder an' scold menD
For fear o' StellenboshG
-
The General 'ad produced a great effectH
The General 'ad the country cleared almostI
The General 'ad no reason to expectH
And the Boers 'ad us bloomin' well on toastI
For we might 'ave crossed the drift before the twilightJ
Instead o' sitting down an' takin' rootK
But we was not allowed so the Boojers scooped the crowdL
To the last survivin' bandolier an' bootK
-
The General saw the farm'ouse in 'is rearM
With its stoep so nicely shaded from the sunN
Sez 'e I'll pitch my tabernacle 'ereM
An' 'e kept us muckin' round till 'e 'ad doneN
For 'e might 'ave caught the confluent pneumoniaO
From sleepin' in his gaiters in the dewP
So 'e took a book an' dozed while the other columns closedQ
And De Wet's commando out an' trickled throughP
-
The General saw the mountain range aheadR
With their 'elios showin' saucy on the 'eightR
So 'e 'eld us to the level ground insteadR
An' telegraphed the Boojers would n't fightR
For 'e might 'ave gone an' sprayed 'em with a pompomS
Or 'e might 'ave slung a squadron out to seeF
But'e was n't takin' chances in them 'igh an' 'ostile kranzesF
He was markin' time to earn a K C BF
-
The General got 'is decorations thickT
The men that backed 'is lies could not complainU
The Staff 'ad D S O 's till we was sickT
An' the soldier 'ad the work to do againD
For 'e might 'ave known the District was an 'otbedR
Instead of 'andin' over upside downV
To a man 'oo 'ad to fight 'alf a year to put it rightR
While the General went an' slandered 'im in townV
-
An' it all went into the laundryF
But it never came out in the washG
We were sugared about by the old menD
Panicky perishin' old menD
That 'amper an' 'inder an' scold menD
For fear o' StellenboshG
