I do not love my Empire's foesA
Nor call 'em angels stillB
What is the sense of 'atin' thoseA
'Oom you are paid to killB
So barrin' all that foreign lotC
Which only joined for spiteD
Myself I'd just as soon as notC
Respect the man I fightD
Ah there Piet 'is trousies to 'is kneesE
'Is coat tails lyin' level in the bullet sprinkled breezeE
'E does not lose 'is rifle an' 'e does not lose 'is seatF
I've known a lot o' people ride a dam' sight worse than PietG
-
I've 'eard 'im cryin' from the groundH
Like Abel's blood of oldI
An' skirmished out to look an' foundH
The beggar nearly coldI
I've waited on till 'e was deadJ
Which couldn't 'elp 'im muchK
But many grateful things 'e 's saidJ
To me for doin' suchK
Ah there Piet whose time 'as come to dieL
'Is carcase past rebellion but 'is eyes inquirin' whyL
Though dressed in stolen uniform with badge o' rank completeF
I've known a lot o' fellers go a dam' sight worse than PietG
-
An' when there was n't aught to doM
But camp and cattle guardsN
I've fought with 'im the 'ole day throughM
At fifteen 'undred yardsN
Long afternoons o' lyin' stillB
An' 'earin' as you layO
The bullets swish from 'ill to 'illO
Like scythes among the 'ayP
Ah there Piet be'ind 'is stony kopQ
With 'is Boer bread an' biltong an' 'is flask of awful DopQ
'Is Mauser for amusement an' 'is pony for retreatF
I've known a lot o' fellers shoot a dam' sight worse than PietG
-
He's shoved 'is rifle 'neath my noseA
Before I'd time to thinkR
An' borrowed all my Sunday clo'esA
An' sent me 'ome in pinkR
An' I 'ave crept Lord 'ow I've creptS
On 'ands an' knees I've goneT
And spoored and floored and caught and keptS
An' sent him to CeylonU
Ah there Piet you've sold me many a pupQ
When week on week alternate it was you an' me 'ands upQ
But though I never made you walk man naked in the 'eatS
I've known a lot of fellows stalk a dam' sight worse than PietS
-
From Plewman's to MarabastadS
From Ookiep to De AarM
Me an' my trusty friend 'ave 'adS
As you might say a warM
But seein' what both parties doneV
Before 'e owned defeatS
I ain't more proud of 'avin' wonV
Than I am pleased with PietS
Ah there Piet picked up be'ind the driveW
The wonder wasn't 'ow 'e fought but 'ow 'e kep' aliveW
With nothin' in 'is belly on 'is back or to 'is feetS
I've known a lot o' men behave a dam' sight worse than PietS
-
No more I'll 'ear 'is rifle crackX
Along the block'ouse fenceA
The beggar's on the peaceful tackX
Regardless of expenseA
For countin' what 'e eats an' drawsA
An' gifts an' loans as wellO
'E's gettin' 'alf the Earth becauseA
'E didn't give us 'EllO
Ah there Piet with your brand new English ploughY
Your gratis tents an' cattle an' your most ungrateful frowM
You've made the British taxpayer rebuild your country seatS
I've known some pet battalions charge a dam' sight less than PietS
