A
-
-
He passed in the very battle smokeB
Of the war that he had descriedC
Three hundred mile of cannon spokeB
When the Master Gunner diedC
-
He passed to the very sound of the gunsD
But before his eye grew dimE
He had seen the faces of the sonsD
Whose sires had served with himE
-
He had touched their sword hilts and greetedC
With the old sure word of praiseF
And there was virtue in touch and speechG
As it had been in old daysF
-
So he dismissed them and took his restC
And the steadfast spirit went forthH
Between the adoring East and WestC
And the tireless guns of the NorthH
-
Clean simple valiant well belovedC
Flawless in faith and fameI
Whom neither ease nor honours movedC
An hair's breadth from his aimI
-
Never again the war wise faceJ
The weighed and urgent wordC
That pleaded in the market placeJ
Pleaded and was not heardC
-
Yet from his life a new life springsK
Through all the hosts to comeL
And Glory is the least of thingsK
That follow this man homeM
