There's a whisper down the field where the year has shot her yieldA
And the ricks stand gray to the sunB
Singing 'Over then come over for the bee has quit the cloverC
And your English summer's done 'D
You have heard the beat of the off shore windE
And the thresh of the deep sea rainF
You have heard the song how long how longG
Pull out on the trail againH
-
Ha' done with the Tents of Shem dear lassI
We've seen the seasons throughJ
And it's time to turn on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
Pull out pull out on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
It's North you may run to the rime ring'd sunB
Or South to the blind Horn's hateL
Or East all the way into Mississippi BayM
Or West to the Golden GateL
Where the blindest bluffs hold good dear lassI
And the wildest tales are trueJ
And the men bulk big on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
And life runs large on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
The days are sick and cold and the skies are gray and oldN
And the twice breathed airs blow dampO
And I'd sell my tired soul for the bucking beam sea rollP
Of a black Bilbao trampO
With her load line over her hatch dear lassI
And a drunken Dago crewJ
And her nose held down on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
From Cadiz Bar on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
There be triple ways to take of the eagle or the snakeQ
Or the way of a man with a maidR
But the sweetest way to me is a ship's upon the seaS
In the heel of the North East TradeR
Can you hear the crash on her bows dear lassI
And the drum of the racing screwJ
As she ships it green on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
As she lifts and 'scends on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
See the shaking funnels roar with the Peter at the foreT
And the fenders grind and heaveU
And the derricks clack and grate as the tackle hooks the crateL
And the fall rope whines through the sheaveU
It's 'Gang plank up and in ' dear lassI
It's 'Hawsers warp her through '-
And it's 'All clear aft' on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
We're backing down on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
O the mutter overside when the port fog holds us tiedV
And the sirens hoot their dreadW
When foot by foot we creep o'er the hueless viewless deepX
To the sob of the questing leadW
It's down by the Lower Hope dear lassI
With the Gunfleet Sands in viewJ
Till the Mouse swings green on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
And the Gull Light lifts on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
O the blazing tropic night when the wake's a welt of lightY
That holds the hot sky tameZ
And the steady fore foot snores through the planet powder'd floorsA2
Where the scared whale flukes in flameZ
Her plates are scarr'd by the sun dear lassI
And her ropes are taut with the dewJ
For we're booming down on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
We're sagging south on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
Then home get her home where the drunken rollers combB2
And the shouting seas drive byC2
And the engines stamp and ring and the wet bows reel and swingD2
And the Southern Cross rides highC2
Yes the old lost stars wheel back dear lassI
That blaze in the velvet blueJ
They're all old friends on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
They're God's own guides on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
-
Fly forward O my heart from the Foreland to the StartE2
We're steaming all too slowF2
And it's twenty thousand mile to our little lazy isleG2
Where the trumpet orchids blowF2
You have heard the call of the off shore windE
And the voice of the deep sea rainF
You have heard the song how long how longG
Pull out on the trail againH
-
The Lord knows what we may find dear lassI
And the deuce knows what we may doJ
But we're back once more on the old trail our own trail the out trailK
We're down hull down on the Long Trail the trail that is always newJ
