OctoberA
-
-
Across a world where all men grieveB
And grieving strive the moreC
The great days range like tides and leaveB
Our dead on every shoreC
Heavy the load we undergoD
And our own hands prepareE
If we have parley with the foeD
The load our sons must bearE
-
Before we loose the wordF
That bids new worlds to birthG
Needs must we loosen first the swordH
Of Justice upon earthG
Or else all else is vainI
Since life on earth beganJ
And the spent world sinks back againK
Hopeless of God and ManJ
-
A People and their KingL
Through ancient sin grown strongM
Because they feared no reckoningL
Would set no bound to wrongM
But now their hour is pastN
And we who bore it findO
Evil Incarnate hell at lastN
To answer to mankindO
-
For agony and spoilP
Of nations beat to dustQ
For poisoned air and tortured soilP
And cold commanded lustQ
And every secret woeD
The shuddering waters sawR
Willed and fulfilled by high and lowD
Let them relearn the LowD
-
That when the dooms are readS
Not high nor low shall sayT
quot My haughty or my humble headS
Was saved me in this day quotS
That till the end of timeU
Their remnant shall recallV
Their fathers old confederate crimeU
Availed them not at allV
-
That neither schools nor priestsW
Nor Kings may build againK
A people with the heart of beastsW
Made wise concerning menK
Whereby our dead shall sleepX
In honour unbetrayedS
And we in faith and honour keepX
That peace for which they paidS
