When foot to wheel and back to windA
The helmsman dare not look behindA
But hears beyond his compass lightB
The blind bow thunder through the nightB
And like a harpstring ere it snapsC
The rigging sing beneath the capsC
Above the shriek of storm in sailD
Or rattle of the blocks blown freeE
Set for the peace beyond the galeD
This song the Needle sings the SeaE
-
Oh drunken Wave Oh driving CloudF
Rage of the Deep and sterile RainG
By love upheld by God allowedF
We go but we return againH
-
When leagued about the 'wildered boatI
The rainbow Jellies fill and floatI
And lilting where the laver lingersJ
The Starfish trips on all her fingersJ
Where 'neath his myriad spines ashockK
The Sea egg ripples down the rockK
An orange wonder dimly guessedL
From darkness where the Cuttles restL
Moored o'er the darker deeps that hideM
The blind white Sea snake and his brideM
Who drowsing nose the long lost ShipsN
Let down through darkness to their lipsN
Safe swung above the glassy deathO
Hear what the constant Needle saithO
-
Oh lisping Reef Oh listless CloudF
In slumber on a pulseless mainG
By Love upheld by God allowedF
We go but we return againH
-
E'en so through Tropic and through TradeP
Awed by the shadow of new skiesQ
As we shall watch old planets fadeP
And mark the stranger stars ariseQ
So surely back through Sun and CloudF
So surely from the outward mainG
By Love recalled by God allowedF
Shall we return return againH
Yea we return return againH
