Unless you come of the gipsy stockA
That steals by night and dayB
Lock your heart with a double lockA
And throw the key awayB
Bury it under the blackest stoneC
Beneath your father's hearthD
And keep your eyes on your lawful ownC
And your feet to the proper pathE
Then you can stand at your door and mockA
When the gipsy vans come throughF
For it isn't right that the Gorgio stockA
Should live as the Romany doF
-
Unless you come of the gipsy bloodG
That takes and never sparesH
Bide content with your given goodI
And follow your own affairsH
Plough and harrow and roll your landJ
And sow what ought to be sowedK
But never let loose your heart from your handJ
Nor flitter it down the roadL
Then you can thrive on your boughten foodM
As the gipsy vans come throughF
For it isn't nature the Gorgio bloodG
Should love as the Romany doF
-
Unless you carry the gipsy eyesN
That see but seldom weepO
Keep your head from the naked skiesN
Or the stars'll trouble your sleepO
Watch your moon through your window paneP
And take what weather she brewsQ
But don't run out in the midnight rainP
Nor home in the morning dewsQ
Then you can buddle and shut your eyesN
As the gipsy vans come throughF
For it isn't fitting the Gorgio ryesN
Should walk as the Romany doF
-
Unless you come of the gipsy raceN
That counts all time the sameR
Be you careful of Time and PlaceN
And Judgment and Good NameR
Lose your life for to live your lifeS
The way that you ought to doF
And when you are finished your God and your wifeS
And the Gipsies'll laugh at youF
Then you can rot in your burying placeN
As the gipsy vans come throughF
For it isn't reason the Gorgio raceN
Should die as the Romany doF
