You may talk o' gin and beerA
When you're quartered safe out 'ereA
An' you're sent to penny fights an' Aldershot itB
But when it comes to slaughterA
You will do your work on waterA
An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got itB
Now in Injia's sunny climeC
Where I used to spend my timeC
A servin' of 'Er Majesty the QueenD
Of all them blackfaced crewA
The finest man I knewA
Was our regimental bhisti Gunga DinE
He was Din Din DinE
You limpin' lump o' brick dust Gunga DinE
Hi slippery hitheraoA
Water get it Panee laoF
You squidgy nosed old idol Gunga DinE
-
The uniform 'e woreA
Was nothin' much beforeA
An' rather less than 'arf o' that be'indB
For a piece o' twisty ragG
An' a goatskin water bagG
Was all the field equipment 'e could findB
When the sweatin' troop train layH
In a sidin' through the dayH
Where the 'eat would make your bloomin' eyebrows crawlI
We shouted Harry ByJ
Till our throats were bricky dryJ
Then we wopped 'im 'cause 'e couldn't serve us allI
It was Din Din DinE
You 'eathen where the mischief 'ave you beenE
You put some juldee in itB
Or I'll marrow you this minuteB
If you don't fill up my helmet Gunga DinE
-
'E would dot an' carry oneK
Till the longest day was doneK
An' 'e didn't seem to know the use o' fearA
If we charged or broke or cutB
You could bet your bloomin' nutB
'E'd be waitin' fifty paces right flank rearA
With 'is mussick on 'is backL
'E would skip with our attackL
An' watch us till the bugles made RetireA
An' for all 'is dirty 'ideB
'E was white clear white insideB
When 'e went to tend the wounded under fireA
It was Din Din DinE
With the bullets kickin' dust spots on the greenD
When the cartridges ran outB
You could hear the front files shoutB
Hi ammunition mules an' Gunga DinE
-
I shan't forgit the nightB
When I dropped be'ind the fightB
With a bullet where my belt plate should 'a' beenE
I was chokin' mad with thirstB
An' the man that spied me firstB
Was our good old grinnin' gruntin' Gunga DinE
'E lifted up my 'eadB
An' he plugged me where I bledB
An' 'e guv me 'arf a pint o' water greenD
It was crawlin' and it stunkM
But of all the drinks I've drunkM
I'm gratefullest to one from Gunga DinE
It was Din Din DinE
'Ere's a beggar with a bullet through 'is spleenD
'E's chawin' up the groundB
An' 'e's kickin' all aroundB
For Gawd's sake git the water Gunga DinE
-
'E carried me awayH
To where a dooli layH
An' a bullet come an' drilled the beggar cleanD
'E put me safe insideB
An' just before 'e diedB
I 'ope you liked your drink sez Gunga DinE
So I'll meet 'im later onN
At the place where 'e is goneO
Where it's always double drill and no canteenD
'E'll be squattin' on the coalsP
Givin' drink to poor damned soulsP
An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga DinE
Yes Din Din DinE
You Lazarushian leather Gunga DinE
Though I've belted you and flayed youA
By the livin' Gawd that made youA
You're a better man than I am Gunga DinE
