This is the story of Evarra manB
Maker of Gods in lands beyond the seaC
Because the city gave him of her goldD
Because the caravans brought turquoisesC
Because his life was sheltered by the KingE
So that no man should maim him none should stealF
Or break his rest with babble in the streetsC
When he was weary after toil he madeG
An image of his God in gold and pearlH
With turquoise diadem and human eyesC
A wonder in the sunshine known afarI
And worshipped by the King but drunk with prideJ
Because the city bowed to him for GodK
He wrote above the shrine quot Thus Gods are madeG
And whoso makes them otherwise shall die quotG
And all the city praised him Then he diedG

Read here the story of Evarra manB
Maker of Gods in lands beyond the seaC
Because the city had no wealth to giveL
Because the caravans were spoiled afarI
Because his life was threatened by the KingE
So that all men despised him in the streetsC
He hewed the living rock with sweat and tearsC
And reared a God against the morning goldG
A terror in the sunshine seen afarI
And worshipped by the King but drunk with prideG
Because the city fawned to bring him backM
He carved upon the plinth quot Thus Gods are madeG
And whoso makes them otherwise shall die quotG
And all the people praised him Then he diedG

Read here the story of Evarra manB
Maker of Gods in lands beyond the seaC
Because he lived among a simple folkN
Because his village was between the hillsC
Because he smeared his cheeks with blood of ewesC
He cut an idol from a fallen pineO
Smeared blood upon its cheeks and wedged a shellP
Above its brows for eyes and gave it hairQ
Of trailing moss and plaited straw for crownR
And all the village praised him for this craftG
And brought him butter honey milk and curdsC
Wherefore because the shoutings drove him madG
He scratched upon that log quot Thus Gods are madeG
And whoso makes them otherwise shall die quotG
And all the people praised him Then he diedG
-
Read here the story of Evarra manB
Maker of Gods in lands beyond the seaC
Because his God decreed one clot of bloodG
Should swerve one hair's breadth from the pulse's pathS
And chafe his brain Evarra mowed aloneT
Rag wrapped among the cattle in the fieldsC
Counting his fingers jesting with the treesC
And mocking at the mist until his GodG
Drove him to labour Out of dung and hornsC
Dropped in the mire he made a monstrous GodG
Abhorrent shapeless crowned with plantain tuftsC
And when the cattle lowed at twilight timeU
He dreamed it was the clamour of lost crowdsC
And howled among the beasts quot Thus Gods are madeG
And whoso makes them otherwise shall die quotG
Thereat the cattle bellowed Then he diedG
-
Yet at the last he came to ParadiseC
And found his own four Gods and that he wroteG
And marvelled being very near to GodG
What oaf on earth had made his toil God's lawV
Till God said mocking quot Mock not These be thine quotG
Then cried Evarra quot I have sinned quot quot Not soC
If thou hadst written otherwise thy GodsC
Had rested in the mountain and the mineO
And I were poorer by four wondrous GodsC
And thy more wondrous law Evarra ThineO
Servant of shouting crowds and lowing kine quotG
Thereat with laughing mouth but tear wet eyesC
Evarra cast his Gods from ParadiseC
