A DA
-
-
Eddi priest of St WilfridB
In his chapel at Manhood EndC
Ordered a midnight serviceD
For such as cared to attendC
-
But the Saxons were keeping ChristmasD
And the night was stormy as wellE
Nobody came to serviceD
Though Eddi rang the bellE
-
quot 'Wicked weather for walking quotC
Said Eddi of Manhood EndC
quot But I must go on with the serviceD
For such as care to attend quotC
-
The altar lamps were lightedC
An old marsh donkey cameF
Bold as a guest invitedC
And stared at the guttering flameF
-
The storm beat on at the windowsG
The water splashed on the floorH
And a wet yoke weary bullockI
Pushed in through the open doorH
-
quot How do I know what is greatestC
How do I know what is leastC
That is My Father's business quotC
Said Eddi Wilfrid's priestC
-
quot But three are gathered togetherJ
Listen to me and attendC
I bring good news my brethren quotC
Said Eddi of Manhood EndC
-
And he told the Ox of a MangerJ
And a Stall in BethlehemK
And he spoke to the Ass of a RiderJ
That rode to JerusalemL
-
They steamed and dripped in the chancelE
They listened and never stirredC
While just as though they were BishopsM
Eddi preached them The WorldC
-
Till the gale blew off on the marshesN
And the windows showed the dayC
And the Ox and the Ass togetherJ
Wheeled and clattered awayC
-
And when the Saxons mocked himO
Said Eddi of Manhood EndC
quot I dare not shut His chapelE
On such as care to attend quotC
