THE BRICKLAYERA
-
I tell this tale which is strictly trueB
Just by way of convincing youB
How very little since things were madeC
Things have altered in building tradeC
-
A year ago come the middle of MarchD
We was building flats near the Marble ArchD
When a thin young man with coal black hairE
Came up to watch us working thereE
-
Now there wasn't a trick in brick or stoneF
Which this young man hadn't seen or knownF
Nor there wasn't a tool from trowel to maulG
But this young man could use 'em allG
-
Then up and spoke the plumbyers boldH
Which was laying the pipes for the hot and coldH
Since you with us have made so freeI
Will you kindly say what your name might beI
-
The young man kindly answered themJ
It might be Lot or MethusalemJ
Or it might be Moses a man I hateK
Whereas it is Pharaoh surnamed the GreatK
-
Your glazing is new and your plumbing's strangeL
But otherwise I perceive no changeL
And in less than a month if you do as I bidM
I'd learn you to build me a PyramidM
-
THE SAILORA
-
I tell this tale which is stricter trueB
Just by way of convincing youB
How very little since things was madeC
Things have altered in the shipwright's tradeC
-
In Blackwall Basin yesterdayN
A China barque re fitting layN
When a fat old man with snow white hairE
Came up to watch us working thereE
-
Now there wasn't a knot which the riggers knewB
But the old man made it and better tooB
Nor there wasn't a sheet or a lift or a braceO
But the old man knew its lead and placeO
-
Then up and spoke the caulkyers boldH
Which was packing the pump in the afterholdH
Since you with us have made so freeI
Will you kindly tell what your name might beI
-
The old man kindly answered themJ
It might be Japheth it might be ShemJ
Or it might be Ham though his skin was darkP
Whereas it is Noah commanding the ArkP
-
Your wheel is new and your pumps are strangeL
But otherwise I perceive no changeL
And in less than a week if she did not groundH
I'd sail this hooker the wide world roundH
-
BOTHQ
-
We tell these tales which are strictest trueB
Just by way of convincing youB
How very little since things was madeH
Any thing alters in any one's tradeH
