We are very slightly changedA
From the semi apes who rangedA
India's Prehistoric clayB
He that drew the longest bowC
Ran his brother down you knowD
As we run men down to dayB
-
quot Dowb quot the first of all his raceE
Met the Mammoth face to faceE
On the lake or in the caveF
Stole the steadiest canoeG
Ate the quarry others slewG
Died and took the finest graveF
-
When they scratched the reindeer boneH
Some one made the sketch his ownH
Filched it from the artist thenI
Even in those early daysJ
Won a simple Viceroy's praiseJ
Through the toil of other menI
Ere they hewed the Sphinx's visageK
Favouritism governed kissageK
Even as it does in this ageK
-
Who shall doubt quot the secret hidL
Under Cheops' pyramid quotL
Was that the contractor didL
Cheops out of several millionsM
Or that Joseph's sudden riseN
To comptroller of SuppliesN
Was a fraud of monstrous sizeN
On King Pharaoh's swart CiviliansM
-
Thus the artless songs I singO
Do not deal with anythingO
New or never said beforeP
As it was in the beginningO
Is to day official sinningO
And shall be for evermoreP
