Winter In Canada Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDD EEFFGG HHEEII JJKKLL EEMMNN OOPPQQ RROOEE RRSSEE TTMMUU| Nay tell me not that with shivering fear | A |
| You shrink from the thought of wintering here | B |
| That the cold intense of our winter time | C |
| Is severe as that of Siberian clime | C |
| And if wishes could waft you across the sea | D |
| You to night in your English home would be | D |
| - | |
| Remember no hedges there now are bright | E |
| With verdure or blossoms of hawthorn white | E |
| In damp sodden fields or bare garden beds | F |
| No daisies or cowslips show their heads | F |
| Whilst chill winds and skies of gloomy hue | G |
| Tell in England as elsewhere 'tis winter too | G |
| - | |
| Away with dull thoughts Raise your brooding eyes | H |
| To yonder unclouded azure skies | H |
| Look round on the earth robed in bridal white | E |
| All glittering and flashing with diamonds bright | E |
| While o'er head her lover and lord the sun | I |
| Shines brightly as e'er in summer he's done | I |
| - | |
| In a graceful sleigh drawn by spirited steed | J |
| You glide o'er the snow with lightning speed | J |
| Whilst from harness decked with silvery bells | K |
| sweet showers the sound on the clear air swells | K |
| And the keen bracing breeze with vigor rife | L |
| Sends quick through your veins warm streams of life | L |
| - | |
| Or on with your snow shoes so strong and light | E |
| Thick blanket coat sash of scarlet bright | E |
| And away o'er the deep and untrodden snow | M |
| Through wood o'er mountain untrammelled to go | M |
| Through lone narrow paths where in years long fled | N |
| The Indian passed with light active tread | N |
| - | |
| What dare to rail at our snow storms why | O |
| Not view them with poet's or artist's eye | O |
| Watch each pearly flake as it falls from above | P |
| Like snowy plumes from some spotless dove | P |
| Clothing all objects in ermine rare | Q |
| More sure than the bright robes which monarchs wear | Q |
| - | |
| Have you not witnessed our glorious nights | R |
| So brilliant with gleaming Northern lights | R |
| Quick flashing and darting across the sky | O |
| While far in the starry heavens on high | O |
| The shining moon pours streams of light | E |
| O'er the silent earth robed in dazzling white | E |
| - | |
| There are times too our woods show wond'rous sights | R |
| Such as are read of in Arabian Nights | R |
| When branch and bough are all laden with gems | S |
| Bright as those that deck Eastern diadems | S |
| And the sun sheds a blaze of dazzling light | E |
| On ruby and opal and diamond bright | E |
| - | |
| Only tarry till Spring on Canadian shore | T |
| And you'll rail at our Tenters then no more | T |
| New health and fresh life through your veins shall glow | M |
| Spite of piercing winds spite of ice and snow | M |
| And I'd venture to promise in truth my friend | U |
| 'Twill not be the last that with us you'll spend | U |
