Rhyme Scheme: ABBCCDD EEFFGH BBIIJJ KKLLDD MMBBNN FFOOPP QQRRSS TTUUVV

Written during the Civil War in the United StatesA
O when will it end this appalling strifeB
With its reckless waste of human lifeB
Its riving of highest holiest tiesC
Its tears of anguish and harrowing sighsC
Its ruined homes from which hope has fledD
Its broken hearts and its countless deadD
-
In fair Virginia the new made gravesE
Lie crowded thick as old ocean s cavesE
Whether sword or sickness dealt the blowF
What matters it They lie cold and lowF
And Maryland s heights are crimsoned o erG
And its green vales stained with human goreH
-
The stalwart man in the prime of lifeB
Sole stay of frail children and helpless wifeB
The bright eyed ardent and beardless boyI
Of some mother s fond breast the pride and joyI
And the soldier love the idol rareJ
Of maiden and matron gentle and fairJ
-
The men of the North so dauntless and freeK
The flower of the Southland chivalryK
The best and the bravest on either sideL
Their citizen soldier the nation s prideL
Carelessly cast in each narrow dank bedD
And fruitlessly numbered among the deadD
-
Are you nearer the end than when Sumter s gunM
Answered the summons of CharlestonM
And the nation plunged in this deadly strifeB
That has wrecked its happiness wealth and lifeB
Say what is your answer to foe or friendN
Tis a strife of which none can guess the endN
-
Oh keep your young strength for some stranger foeF
Let not brother s rash hand lay brother lowF
Remember one soil your childhood nursedO
In the past together your bonds you burstO
Together for freedom you learned to strikeP
And brave Washington honored you both alikeP
-
You have proved to the nations your mutual mightQ
You have proved you can suffer struggle and fightQ
By hundreds and thousands lie heaped your slainR
Your life blood crimsons hill stream and plainR
Prove of nobler struggle you are able yetS
And your mutual wrongs forgive and forgetS
-
Oh Father of mercies stay now each handT
Put back in its sheath the blood stained brandT
Whisper sage counsel to rulers proudU
Calm the wrath of the people fierce and loudU
So that their hates and their strife may ceaseV
And their land know once more the boon of peaceV
