In a fair and sunny forest gladeB
O erarched with chesnuts oldC
Through which the radiant sunbeams madeB
A network of bright goldC
A girl smiled softly to herselfD
And dreamed the hours awayE
Lulled by the sound of the murmuring brookF
With the summer winds at playE
-
Jewels gleamed not in the tresses fairG
That fell in shining showersH
Naught decked that brow of beauty rareG
But a wreath of forest flowersH
And the violet wore no deeper blueI
Than her own soft downcast eyeJ
Whilst her bright cheek with the rose s hueI
In loveliness well might vieJ
-
But she was too fair to bloom unknownK
By forest or valley sideL
And long ere two sunny years had flownK
The girl was a wealthy brideL
Removed to so high and proud a sphereM
That she well at times might deemN
The humble home of her childhood dearM
A fleeting changeful dreamN
-
No more her foot sought the grassy gladeB
At the break of summer dayE
No more neath the chesnut spreading shadeB
In reverie sweet she layE
But in abodes of wealth and prideL
With serious stately mienO
That envy s rancorous tongue defiedL
She now alone was seenO
-
But was she happier Who might knowP
Wealth fortune on her smiledQ
Yet there were some who whispered lowP
That she fates favored childQ
Oft pressed her brow with a weary handR
In gay and festive hoursH
And fain would change her jewell d bandR
For a wreath of forest flowersH
