The Village Girl And Her High-born Suitor Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC BBDDEE FFGGHH IIJJDD BBGGKL MMNNBB

O maiden peerless come dwell with meA
And bright shall I render thy destinyA
Thou shalt leave thy cot by the green hillsideB
To dwell in a palace home of prideB
Where crowding menials with lowly mienC
Shall attend each wish of their lovely queenC
-
Ah stranger my cot by the green hillsideB
Hath more charms for me than thy halls of prideB
If the roof be lowly the moss rose thereD
Rich fragrance sheds on the summer airD
And the birds and insects with joyous songE
Are more welcome far than a menial throngE
-
Child tell me not so too fair art thouF
With thy starry eyes and thy queenlike browF
To dwell in this spot sequestered and loneG
Thy marvelous beauty to all unknownG
And that form which might grace a throne arrayedH
In the lowly garb of a peasant maidH
-
Nay a few short days since didst thou not sayI
That I in my rustic kirtle grayI
In thine eyes looked lovelier fairer farJ
Than robed in rich state as court ladies areJ
And the wreath of violets in my hairD
Pleased thee more than diamond or ruby rareD
-
Beloved if thus coldly thou turn st asideB
From the tempting lures of wealth and prideB
Sure thy woman s heart must some pity ownG
For one who breathes for thy self aloneG
And who would brave suffering grief and toilK
To win from thy rose lips one shy sweet smileL
-
Ah enough of this thy love may be trueM
But I have tried friends who love me tooM
And in proud homes governed by fashion s voiceN
Thou would st learn to blush for thy lowly choiceN
Go seek thee a noble a high born brideB
And leave me my cot by the green hillsideB
