Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGF GHGIJKLK GMFMNJGJ OPQPRGSG TGUGGMGM VGGGWMXM YIMIZGA2G B2HPIC2D2GD2 E2F2GF2G2KH2K| Quickly are crumbling the old gray walls | A |
| Soon the last stone will be gone | B |
| The olden church of the Recollects | C |
| We shall look no more upon | D |
| And though perchance some stately pile | E |
| May rise its place to fill | F |
| With carven piers and lofty towers | G |
| Old Church we shall miss thee still | F |
| - | |
| Though not like Europe s ancient fanes | G |
| Moss grown and ivied o er | H |
| Bearing long centuries darkened stains | G |
| On belfry and turrets hoar | I |
| A hundred years and more hast thou | J |
| Thy shadow o er us cast | K |
| And we claim thee in our country s youth | L |
| As a land mark of the past | K |
| - | |
| Thou st seen the glittering Fleur de lys | G |
| Fling out its folds on high | M |
| From old Dalhousie s fortress hill | F |
| Against the morning sky | M |
| And later the gleam of an English flag | N |
| From its cannon crowned brow | J |
| That flag which despite the changing years | G |
| Floateth proudly o er us now | J |
| - | |
| Thou st seen the dark browed Indians too | O |
| Thronging each narrow street | P |
| In their garb so strangely picturesque | Q |
| Their gaily moccassined feet | P |
| And beside them gentle helpmates stood | R |
| Dark hued with soft black eyes | G |
| In blanket robes with necklets bright | S |
| Large beads of brilliant dyes | G |
| - | |
| Thou st seen our city far outgrow | T |
| The bounds of its ancient walls | G |
| In beauty growing and in wealth | U |
| And free from early thralls | G |
| Till round Mount Royal s queenly heights | G |
| That stretch toward the sky | M |
| In pomp and splendor beauteous homes | G |
| Of luxury closely lie | M |
| - | |
| Within this time worn portal prayed | V |
| The sons of differing creeds | G |
| And unto God in various ways | G |
| Made known their various needs | G |
| Better dwell thus in brotherly love | W |
| All seeking one common weal | M |
| Than stir the stormy waters of strife | X |
| Through hasty and misjudged zeal | M |
| - | |
| And for many years the exiles lone | Y |
| Who landed upon our shore | I |
| From Erin s green and sunny isle | M |
| Did here their God adore | I |
| And laid their aching sad hearts bare | Z |
| To His kind pitying gaze | G |
| And prayed to Him in this new strange land | A2 |
| For better and brighter days | G |
| - | |
| And humble Recollect Friars here | B2 |
| Their matins recited o er | H |
| And glided with noiseless sandalled feet | P |
| O er the chapel s sacred floor | I |
| Again at the close of day they met | C2 |
| Amid clouds of incense dim | D2 |
| And the softened rays of tapers blaze | G |
| To sing their evening hymn | D2 |
| - | |
| They and their order have passed away | E2 |
| From among their fellow men | F2 |
| Little recked they for earth s joys or gains | G |
| On heaven bent their ken | F2 |
| The lowly church that has borne their name | G2 |
| So faithfully to the last | K |
| Linked with our city s young days like them | H2 |
| Will henceforth be of the past | K |
