Quickly are crumbling the old gray wallsA
Soon the last stone will be goneB
The olden church of the RecollectsC
We shall look no more uponD
And though perchance some stately pileE
May rise its place to fillF
With carven piers and lofty towersG
Old Church we shall miss thee stillF
-
Though not like Europe s ancient fanesG
Moss grown and ivied o erH
Bearing long centuries darkened stainsG
On belfry and turrets hoarI
A hundred years and more hast thouJ
Thy shadow o er us castK
And we claim thee in our country s youthL
As a land mark of the pastK
-
Thou st seen the glittering Fleur de lysG
Fling out its folds on highM
From old Dalhousie s fortress hillF
Against the morning skyM
And later the gleam of an English flagN
From its cannon crowned browJ
That flag which despite the changing yearsG
Floateth proudly o er us nowJ
-
Thou st seen the dark browed Indians tooO
Thronging each narrow streetP
In their garb so strangely picturesqueQ
Their gaily moccassined feetP
And beside them gentle helpmates stoodR
Dark hued with soft black eyesG
In blanket robes with necklets brightS
Large beads of brilliant dyesG
-
Thou st seen our city far outgrowT
The bounds of its ancient wallsG
In beauty growing and in wealthU
And free from early thrallsG
Till round Mount Royal s queenly heightsG
That stretch toward the skyM
In pomp and splendor beauteous homesG
Of luxury closely lieM
-
Within this time worn portal prayedV
The sons of differing creedsG
And unto God in various waysG
Made known their various needsG
Better dwell thus in brotherly loveW
All seeking one common wealM
Than stir the stormy waters of strifeX
Through hasty and misjudged zealM
-
And for many years the exiles loneY
Who landed upon our shoreI
From Erin s green and sunny isleM
Did here their God adoreI
And laid their aching sad hearts bareZ
To His kind pitying gazeG
And prayed to Him in this new strange landA2
For better and brighter daysG
-
And humble Recollect Friars hereB2
Their matins recited o erH
And glided with noiseless sandalled feetP
O er the chapel s sacred floorI
Again at the close of day they metC2
Amid clouds of incense dimD2
And the softened rays of tapers blazeG
To sing their evening hymnD2
-
They and their order have passed awayE2
From among their fellow menF2
Little recked they for earth s joys or gainsG
On heaven bent their kenF2
The lowly church that has borne their nameG2
So faithfully to the lastK
Linked with our city s young days like themH2
Will henceforth be of the pastK
