Well have Canadians chosen theeA
As the emblem of their landB
Thou noble spreading maple treeA
Lord of the forest grandB
Through all the changes Time has madeC
Thy woods so deep and hoarD
Have given their homesteads pleasant shadeC
And beauty to their shoreD
-
Say what can match in splendor rareE
Thy foliage brightly greenF
Thy leaves that wave in summer s airE
Glossy as satin sheenF
When Spring returns the first art thouG
On mountain or in valeH
With springing life and budding boughG
To tell the joyous taleH
-
In Autumn s hours of cheerless gloomI
How glowing is the dyeJ
Of the crimson robe thou dost assumeI
Though it only be to dieJ
Like the red men who long years agoK
Reposed beneath thy shadeC
And wore a smiling lip and browG
On the pyre their foes had madeC
-
And e en in Winter fair art thouG
With many a brilliant gemL
That might adorn fair lady s browG
Or deck a diademL
And better than thy beauty rareE
Or shade thou givest freeA
The life stream of thy branches fairE
Thou gen rous brave old treeA
-
Warmly we pray no deed of harmM
May fright thy peaceful shadeC
May st thou ne er see in war s alarmM
Contending foes arrayedC
But smiling down on peasants braveN
On honest tranquil toilO
Thy branches ever brightly waveN
Above a happy soilO
