O Madonna pure and holyA
From sin s dark stain ever freeA
Refuge of the sinner lowlyA
I come I come to theeA
Now with wreaths of sinful pleasureB
Yet my tresses twined amongC
From the dance s giddy measureB
From the idle jest and songD
-
See I tear away the flowersE
From my perfumed golden hairF
Closely tended in past hoursE
With such jealous sinful careF
Never more for me they blossomG
Not for me those jewels vainH
On my arms or brow or bosomG
They shall never shine againI
-
Dost thou wonder at my daringJ
Thus to seek thy sacred shrineK
When the sinner s lot despairingJ
Wretched hopeless should be mineK
To the instincts high of womanL
Most unfaithful and untrueM
Yet Madonna hope inspires meA
For thou wast a woman tooM
-
Evil promptings dark despairingJ
Whisper Leave this sacred spotN
Back to sinful joys repairingJ
In them live and struggle notN
But a bright hope tells that heavenL
May by me e en yet be wonL
That I yet may be forgivenL
Mary by thy spotless SonL
-
Yes I look on thy mild featuresE
Full of dove like tender loveO
Once the humblest of God s creaturesE
Now with Him enthroned aboveO
Every trait angelic breathingJ
Sweetest promises of peaceP
And the smile thy soft lips wreathingJ
Tell me that my griefs shall ceaseP
-
Soft the evening shadows gatherB
But no longer shall I waitQ
I will rise and seek the FatherB
For it is not yet too lateQ
And when earthly cares oppress meA
When life s paths my bruised feet painH
Hither shall I come to rest meA
And new strength and courage gainH
